ngl, it was hard to finish. it just didn't hold my attention for long 🤷🏽‍♀️ also, it's so sexist! like the main dude says "i h8 ownership" right after they fck the 1st time, BUT THEN! after a long affair he says "I WANT THE THINGS WHICH ARE MINE, WHICH BELONG TO ME"

Ugh, Netflix, why must you use [speaking arabic] instead of using the existing translation that was included when it was released?

Anyway, I expected some tragic WWII love story, but what type it would be exactly kept me guessing. At first I thought the patient would be Hana’s boyfriend and he’d picked up the accent as a result of damage to his mouth, but that was pretty quickly disproven; next was a generic nurse-and-soldier story, but that didn’t quite fit either. The reveal of him a Hungarian Nazi was… yikes, and the sanitatization of his story even worse. If this were about another war, another man, maybe it would be romantic, but this was the story of a Nazi dressed up in a Gatsby-esque love triangle, and nothing about Nazis can ever be separated from their atrocities.

Even without the Nazism of it all, the whole thing was incredibly tedious and dull. Why did I have to wait three hours to learn the blonde died over something completely unrelated to the war, for a dying man to die, and for two people extremely affected by the war to want to spare his life anyway? For a movie often described as an epic, it’s anything but.

I will admit the cinematography is beautiful though.

My Rating: 9/10

Nominated for 12 Oscar’s and won 9. LOVED the cinematography throughout the film. Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas had AMAZING chemistry. Great storyline as well.
