The Colors Within

6/10 Really enjoyed the interesting dynamic between the three of them and the songs at the end! I do wish it would have dived more into the “seeing peoples colors” part as halfway through I forgot that was even a thing. I also do wish they did spend a bit more time on each characters story and development as there were a few things that kinda flew by. Overall a good film, but one of those you watch and then likely forget about in a month but still very enjoyable!

The Colors Within

Rated: 8.1/10 ⭐️

I expected a simple coming-of-age story, but the stunning animation and emotional maturity totally blew me away.

What Worked:
Yamada’s watercolor palette gives the film a tactile weight capturing adolescence. Through my Faith Methodism lens, the trio using a remote church to heal reminds me that true community is a sanctuary for our true colors. Hirose’s editing and Ushio’s score also give the practice sessions a dynamic flow.

The Cuts:
The middle really dragged for me; slice-of-life montages stall the momentum. Keeping it spoiler-free, the central conflicts feel half-baked since the stakes are just internal misunderstandings. Plus, the family resolutions feel rushed; I wanted room for their complex lives to breathe.

Verdict:
A stunning, gentle story. Perfect for cozy, musical vibes, but skip if you need high-stakes drama.

Favorite Line: “You give off the most beautiful color of all.”
