The Celebration
Such a cringe-inducing and uncomfortable film, it gives you the same feeling you get when you go to a dinner party that you can’t wait to leave from. Incredibly well made.

Festen is an incredible stroke of genius, I was taken aback when it first started with how it’s shot - then learned about “dogme 95” - wow does this method of filmmaking really make an impact…
The film itself, much like Another Round, the only other Vinterberg film I’ve seen, has a fantastic script, not a single word is wasted. Characters are well fleshed out and developed in a way which is maybe only possible as a result of how the Dogme 95 movement allows it to.
All the cast were genuinely phenomenal, recognising a few from Another Round, although of course younger. I was floored several times, not only by the writing itself, but the performances which make it hit as hard as it does with such profound impact.
I gasped several times throughout, the most awkward dinner party I’ve ever attended, really positioning you as another guest. I really need to now rewatch Another Round, and dip into more of Vinterberg’s work. A tremendous filmmaker.
