Seed of Chucky
While I’d say Seed of Chucky is an improvement over Bride of Chucky, it’s still not a particularly good movie. At the very least, we’re spared the insufferable teenage protagonists from Bride, but Seed swings so far into comedy that it completely loses the horror element that made the franchise iconic in the first place. That said, I do recognize that both Bride and Seed were necessary for keeping the Child’s Play franchise alive. The introduction of Tiffany and the shift toward dark humor gave the series a new identity, even if it’s not one I personally enjoy. As for Seed itself, I actually liked the addition of Glen/Glenda. They’re funny and bring a weirdly fresh energy, but ultimately, they feel unnecessary to the overall story. What frustrated me most, though, was Chucky’s decision at the end to give up on becoming human. How do you spend three films, plus Bride and most of Seed, desperately trying to become human, only to suddenly decide, “Actually, I like being a doll”? It made absolutely no sense and felt like lazy writing. But I will say the “I’m Chucky the killer doll” line did go insanely hard. The meta plotline with Tiffany possessing Jennifer Tilly was also more confusing than entertaining. While I appreciated Tiffany’s little self-insults (those were genuinely hilarious), the whole concept felt overcomplicated. On the other hand, the idea of Chucky and Tiffany becoming movie stars actually worked for me—it makes sense that a pair of infamous killers could become urban legends turned into Hollywood myths. What doesn’t make sense, though, is that in later installments, no one seems to remember who Chucky is. Wasn’t he supposed to be famous for a while? Overall, Seed of Chucky is slightly better than Bride, but still far from great. It has its funny moments and some clever ideas, but it leaves a messy impression and doesn’t make the cut for my favorites. Unlike Bride, though, I might be persuaded to rewatch it someday—but for now, it’s a solid “meh.”
