I personally think that he did it at the end, and the final scene was just a dream sequence, a beautiful thought, the last bit of hope, what he wished had actually happened. and he was really lying on the floor taking his last breaths.

Ethan Hawke. Man does he deliver a career defining performance in this intimate and morally suffocating religious drama costarring Amanda Seyfried who is also phenomenal - this movie asks questions that humans have grappled with forever and still need answers to this day - deals with mental illness and isolation and themes of grief and navigating through tremendous loss - this movie caused me to think so deeply about the state of our world right now and what we are not doing to fix it, and how it can make you feel insane when everyone around you doesn’t realize just how bad it really is
