You can tell this movie was a play from the limited amount of scene change and heavy dialogue. The performances were great and I liked the overall themes. Ultimately this film asks what’s more important: preserving the past or forging a new future. Just wish there was more.

I was looking forward to this, especially for Malcolm/David Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. Overall, the performances were repetitive and irritating. I think it's mostly down to it originally being a play, although I wasn't expecting the writing and acting to be that disappointingly poor. It was a struggle to keep up with the pace since some scenes were loudly explicit with what was going on and others prolonged implicitly. I'm still confused about mostly everything except for the message and music, which were both exceptionally executed. A shame those scenes are sandwiched in a migraine.

I just couldn’t get into this movie. Too much fighting and bickering and not a lot happening.

I was hoping for more historical value to a good thrill ratio within this movie but it was more or less slow and not really attention grabbing. Feel like there could have been a lot more done with this film. 5.2 out of 10

i can tell this was a play turned into a movie. it feels like they forgot that movies are a different medium and you can other creative things with film besides just…talk. idk. loved all the actors though except for ray fisher who made my skin crawl literally every time he opened his mouth to speak lmfao

I do not dislike the movie. I love the cast but the movie was a bit slow for me until the ending.

A family Drama adapted from a play that traps us in a house with powerhouse performances, a ghost, and endless arguments on selling a legacy piano.

Another August Wilson classic

Whilst it can be a little stagey and plodding it is a high quality adaptation that’ll certainly do well come awards season

Feels like this film doesn’t even really know what it’s trying to be or what story it’s trying to tell. The actors’ performances are the only saving grace. Everyone is fantastic.

i liked the story but the movie did drag.

Spellbinding tale of the power of ancestral memory. Highly recommend!

Such a beautiful film. I had chills the whole time. Insane acting and directing all wrapped up into a masterpiece of a film. A must watch, and then a must rewatch.
