This used to be a like for me, now it’s a love. 2 of the greatest performances ever from Phoenix and Hoffman. Upon review you have to ask yourself “What happened?” And it may lead you to ask “Why am I still thinking about it?” That’s what it was for me. This has stayed in my head

It's like an introductory movie for the character of the Joker, I recommend watching it and then watching the Joker 7,8/10

This is a PTA masterpiece with one of the more ridiculous casts ever from a pure acting talent perspective - the themes of brokenness and the cultish behaviors that were explored in this movie could not have been portrayed by two better people than Joaquin phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman - Mali ramek and Jesse plemmons were delightful surprises to this cast and were phenomenal in every scene they were in - the script was near perfection but I must say the ending made me feel sort of unsatisfied

definitely a strange one. i’m not super sure that pta is my style; i didn’t enjoy one battle after another all that much. joaquin phoenix and psh are both insanely good in this. i mean killed it. the story itself was fine, but i was bored at times. very pretty visuals, though!

What a strange one! Some very interesting takes on faith, all carried along by this dream-like approach to scenes which I struggle to describe beyond that.
Really effective imagery from the get-go, quite unlike anything else I’ve seen from PTA, having now seen all but one of his films. Besides being effective narratively, it’s also just stunning, beautiful framing, healthy colour and contrast - the result is really, really strong. Quite probably my favourite Johnny Greenwood score too, even surpassing One Battle After Another’s, really builds on the tone and atmosphere the rest of the film lays out.
My favourite Joaquin Phoenix performance - there, I said it! So much depth to the character and his portrayal of him, Phoenix is always great, but I’ve never felt so enveloped by a role of his like this. Actually, ditto for Hoffman, tremendous performance, I couldn’t actually choose between the two as to which I preferred - both remarkably striking and left a serious impression on me.
Yet another PTA picture that demands a rewatch. Some much to take in and work out, being there’s a lot to infer rather than just being fed answers like an infant. Really good stuff!

i really don’t know what to write for my review of this film. it’s so complex and intricate and relevant to our time. it’s so “master”fully made, from the acting to the cinematography to the writing. genuinely so thought provoking

On my fourth go-around with The Master, I had a moment where I thought, “You know what? I’m finally going to recommend this to my friends.” And then, five minutes in, Joaquin Phoenix is aggressively beating it on the beach to a pair of sand tits. This movie is brilliant. I think it’s my favorite of all time. It’s like a dream powered by fermented paint thinner

6.3/10 I really wanted to like it but I didn’t enjoy it that much. Weird movie that I couldn’t connect to. PSH carried.
