The Man in My Basement Reviews

It's based on a book, and you can tell. The level of absurdity behind nearly every scene and metaphor... I can't tell if my interpretations are delusional, daft, or both. Don't watch this if you're expecting a surface-level story with explicit answers. As much as certain themes like identity, morality, race, culture, grief, and so on are picked up on, almost nothing is explicitly explained. I've not seen much of Hawkins, but I hope to see more of him, and Dafoe, as always, does it justice. The sound design and directing almost achieve 'horror', but I'd call it more thriller. All in all, it's alright but could've been better.

I thought this could be good, and it kept threatening that something interesting would happen, but it never did.

It started really interesting… and then left so many loose ends it felt like a waste of time, like choose a plot and go with it.

This movie had potential but I feel like it lost that potential somewhere along the way. I kept wondering what was gonna happen and not much really ever happened. It’s just a slow movie that doesn’t have much of a thriller aspect.

Interesting at times and the themes seemed to work, but the execution is just not good. Willem Dafoe and Corey Hawkins do the best they can but this film is just disappointing
