The Act of Killing

Conflicted on how to rate this because it’s educational but disturbing and frustrating to watch. This man killed at least 1000 people and really had the audacity to ask if he sinned 😐

The Act of Killing

Took me a while to finish this bc I’ve been so busy and this film is very…. Load-bearing. Disturbing doesn’t even begin to describe it. It makes for a great watch tho. Something about seeing men so casually, in their day to day lives with families now, speak fondly of the past killing and raping thousands. And that last scene was equally heartbreaking and chilling. It was like he finally had a moment of clarity after all these years of the true gravity of his actions

The Act of Killing

Been debating on how go even approach this monster of a film and I sincerely think no words can do it justice. A brutal, hopeless, sincerely upsetting watch that is a bummer for all 3 hours of the director’s cut. My problems with this documentary sincerely reside alongside what allows it to even exist and for me that is difficult to attribute to proper critique, however in this case it feels warranted. Allowing monsters to humanize themselves, allowing killers a platform to dictate history, rewrite morality, and blatantly extinguish the flames of humanity made me sick to my stomach. The atrocities burrow inside of you to an upsetting degree, but you start to realize that this is a real world perspective, it is the absolute norm of where the documentary is set, and it is a matter of truth that very well should distress a sheltered mind. It’s important to be exposed to these truths, and it is important to ponder them as it is a fast track to growth, but the path it took to get there in this case was indeed a monster. The absolute freedom given to the subjects of this documentary was astounding, and the depths of filmmaking on display here were astonishing, Oppenheimer has a unique mind for how to push a narrative in the background and in this case he absolutely nailed the approach. This was a watch I’ve found myself appreciating more and more with time, it made me glad that bravery within filmmaking still exists. 4/5

Probably a 5 but learning about a torture and genocide makes me uncomfortable and I don’t understand Bahasa Indonesia that well yet.
