I had huge expectations for this, I thought it was going to be blockbuster of the year, I was hyped.

I think it fell short, I really wanted to like it but I couldn’t.

This is personal taste but when the different generations come during the song it just threw me off.
And I hate that it did because we had spent an hour and 20 minutes to actually get to the part where we knew it was about to go down, and then the music piece happened and it threw me off.

Micheal B. Jordan was awesome, and honestly, the whole cast was shining, but even with that, with characters dying off, I wasn’t feeling a thing, it was kind of emotionless, no real depth in the characters.

I also love blues, but it’s unnecessary to have a song play every 15 minutes, I know what they were trying to do, it didn’t really work in my opinion.

It’s shot beautifully, I mean 55mm is something else, very well made, production wise.

I think the story lacks a bit.

And for the grand battle, it just kinda came and went. Again, major characters dying off and couldn’t feel a thing.

Also in that last battle, extras popping in and out, you see them for the party scenes, then they all kinda disappear, and then they’re back to get killed off. I mean…

Finally, did I really need an end credit scene, idk, it did fill some questions I had but honestly, it could’ve been resolved during the actual scenes, instead of having a 7 minute post credit scene, it felt more like a chore than a treat to have that sprinkled in there.

Obviously this is my opinion, lmk if you liked it or not, if you did, please comment on why, I wanna see if I missed something, since it’s getting really good reviews.

Thank you for reading!

9.8 - Instant classic.

Ryan Coogler has his masterpiece. The soul poured into this makes you feel alive. There’s so many moments I just couldn’t stop smiling, knowing I’m watching something special. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s gripping. It’s tense. It’s funny. It’s powerful. And Ludwig Göransson deserves so much of the credit too. This movie sounds as good as it looks. (And the hype around the music through the decades sequence is so deserved.)

Michael B. Jordan is the standout (he and Coogler don’t miss together), delivering two moving, layered performances, but I have to also give credit to Miles Caton in his debut for carrying so much of the soul of this movie. Hailee Steinfeld gives probably her career performance as well.

I’m already planning the second watch.

coogler has a beautiful talent in storytelling. the movie’s understanding of black history is multilayered and nuanced. it’s definitely a film that i recommend people to rewatch and hear differing perspectives before doing so. but wow so beautiful i could cry
