9.0 - Is there anything more terrifying than a mother’s love?
Not very often does a movie, especially a horror, live up to its pre-release hype. And this is close.
It’s a relatively fresh take on both psychological & cult horror which is really hard to do nowadays, especially with the over-saturation of both sub-genres over the last 15ish years. But the Philippou brothers delivered again & provided some of the most striking & gruesome scenes of the last couple years.
It fits well in the A24 “indie” vibe where most of the horror isn’t in jump scares or terrible monsters but just in human action & general aura. Sally Hawkins gives her best performance I’ve seen, & absolutely carries the weight of the horror elements, but all three primary youth actors absolutely held their0 own as well.
When compared directly to Talk to Me, it’s not lingering with me as a complete work quite as hard, & it wasn’t as direct & easy to piece together, but the slow build suspense to absolute balls to the wall shock is there.
It might need a second watch for it to fully all come together, but I think it could end up being one of the year’s best in what looks to be an absolutely loaded slate for the horror genre.

Holy crap this was intense. Go in as blind as you can. But if you need more, it blends supernatural horror with body horror and ritualistic possession together in such an excellent amazing way. It feels like Hereditary mixed with Talk to Me, which some great acting and freaky moments. Don’t miss this one.

Bring Her Back
solid body horror/gorey bits, but story is predictable and kind of boring

I should’ve expected this after Talk To Me, but once again, this is a really great movie that I will not be watching again! It’s so graphic and heart wrenching and as happy as I am that 2 people survived who I wanted to, one did not, and I just can’t forgive them for that.
