I’ve tried 3 times, and still have never finished it. It’s slow, tedious (incredibly long and dull scenes that repeat over and over)

It’s one of few old movies Ive watched that truly shows its age. I’m not dumb enough to say “you have to watch it like youre in the 1940’s”

Overdramatic performances and poor execution of storytelling for today’s standards. I’m very critical on realism and this film had almost none to speak of. Maniacal laughing, endless and unnecessary crying, long drawn out silences. It all took me out of a captivated headspace. 👎

Soooooo good!!!

The influence this film had on other works and cinema in general is insane. Brilliant.
Will probably change it to love later.

Weird and confusing. Interesting idea of a murder where three parties admit guilt. Just strange execution. Slow reaction shots.

An absolute masterpiece of cinema, it’s one of the most thrilling rides you could go on, the depth of both the writing and it’s characters feels like pictorial Shakespeare, Kurosawa has once again proved to me that not only is he a master at what he does, but in doing so he’s been this master for an odd 40 years.

Rashomon is in its own right a wall to wall masterpiece, there’s a damn good reason why Rashomon put Japan on the film map so early, it’s this, Without it we would be without the very well known Rashomon effect of deliberate contradictory to change the narrative, influencing probably every single film that came out after it to this very day.

I could go on and on and probably on a bit more about how good this truly is, but I shall continue with the categories.

1st Act 9.7/10 (Looking back on it, right from the get-go you could understand the movie, and yet, it’s so well thought out, you couldn’t think of it in a million years.)

2nd Act 9.4/10 (The most visually stunning, but can lead to minor confusion, but does not last trust me.)

3rd Act 11/10 (Ties everything together and makes you change everything you had ever thought, just as a good thriller should do.)

Plot 11/10 (The man created a psychological cinema effect for fucks sake.)

Soundtrack/Score 11/10 (There’s about an hour long soundtrack, and I wouldn’t change a second of where it is or what it sounds like.)

Acting 11/10 (Mifune gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen, a master at his very best, and yet he’s still got a good 40 odd years left in him.)

Pacing 10/10 (It’s thrilling, it’s tense, it’s deep but best of all, it perfectly knows when to stop and cutaway.)

Cinematography 11/10 (The end of the second act had this sealed, everything else was just an add on to the amazement.)

Character Development 10/10 (Not for the reason you might think, as most of these are nameless, it’s more on the fact that they are nameless and they still deliver so much on themselves and you that you can’t help but admire.)

Writing 11/10 (The man writes like Mike Tyson’s punches, can’t go one second without damage to your cranium because of how good he is.)

Ending 9.8/10 (So deep, so beautiful, so fleeting, so loud and yet so quiet.)

Direction 9.6/10 (Even in his early work, he’s a master, like prime Kubrick level master.)

Influential film. I love Takashi Shimura. I love the Rashomon style of storytelling and the philosophical dialogue.

But movie itself is a little stale though. The wife’s laughs made my ears bleed and the fighting was not on par with the rest of this era’s.

crazy to think this was five years after world war 2 ended. makes the film's dark setting that much more visceral.

what stood out to me the most from this film was its phenomenal cinematography and composition, especially the framing. overall though, the story offers some very nice messages and lessons. akira kurosawa is truly the beethoven of cinema

This movie had so much influence on modern film and it is very noticeable, which is very interesting to follow through the movie. Aside from the respect for this movies impact, it tells an intense story with a powerful message about the varying perceptions of evil

As of now it’s a like. I can see the influence it had on other media following it, but half the characters were insufferable. Either way it had me wanting to know more of the story and keep watching

Im sorry i dont really care

When Masako was chasing Tajômaro I got flashbacks from when was at this party and I played beer pong for the first time and I won against this girl and she was chasing me around the house with the couch pillows for literally 5 minutes.

Exaggerated acting 101❤️

Unfortunately I don’t think I can really make a clear judgment here. I watched it on hbo and the subtitles didn’t match the behaviors of the characters, so I had to rely on visual clues to understand what was happening, some of which were surely lost in translation culturally as well as literally. Rashomon-style storytelling is one of my favorite tropes, and it’s quite frustrating that the trope namer is currently so inaccessible.

Didn't like it at all. The subtitles made no sense at times, the tone didn't match the subject matter of the film, and the flashbacks were unnecessary. I've been really enjoying Kurosawa, but this one has aged poorly in my opinion.

Very good, with a deep meaning. Technically not the most impressive but super cool
