Plainclothes
Such an immensely beautiful film.
From a filmmaking perspective, it’s outstanding. The editing choices made and the cinematography are so creative and rich and convey such emotion. I loved the use of cutting to the 90s home video aesthetic and pairing that with really gorgeous shots that feel more contemporary. The score is really wonderful and the costuming as well.
For performances, Tom Blyth nails this. He perfectly conveys the emotions and fears of a closeted man in the 90s in such a visceral way. And the scenes where he shows his vulnerability really brought me to tears. I was blown away by his performance in this and want to see him in so much more. His talent is evident. Maria Dizzia also really shines in this in a supporting role. She conveys so much emotion and authenticity in just her face.
As for the story, I think it’s perfect. It so perfectly illustrates what it’s like to live in fear, in shame and in secret because of who you are. And it shows how powerful those relationships are (both romantic and platonic) that you form in that and how critical they can be in finding your way through it. This one really touched me in a deep way both in how beautiful and honest it is, as well as in its bravery and hopefulness. This is one I will really remember.

Nah cuz why was this lowkey relatable? I’m not one to give straight men in queer roles their flowers, but I have to give it to Tom Blyth👏🏽excellent performance. And the chemistry between him and Russell 🤌🏽✨beautiful. Also, I really like the way this was shot and edited!

I for sure recommend this. Great story. Great actors. The timelines was a bit discombobulating but that also adds to the tension, confusion, and frustration. The final scene, wow. And that sigh. Felt that.
