Persona

Confusing yet captivating exploration of the human psyche

My favorite film ever! Psychologically complex and continues to keep me thinking after every rewatch. Any movie that shakes the audience to its core and leaves you thinking after is high up there for me. Cinematography and symbolism make this a standout movie for me.

understandably hailed as one of bergman’s best, an intoxicating and fantastical journey through the human psyche. the performances are perfect as is the script and captivating imagery. masterful in its approach, clearly inspiring many of my personal favorite works

incredibly profound and philosophical exploration of the human self, more specifically the female self - still not entirely sure i understand everything that happened but i am of the belief that the story is about one woman split into two distinct persons, each representing one aspect of herself - the symbolism and visual poetry style of film is incredibly vivid - incredible acting from both of the lead actresses

overall that film is great capturing human psychic nature for example that one scene when alma were trying to say sorry but the other refused alma said "u don't want to accept it because u feel proud now and don't want to be at my level." and that's one of the "psychic natures".

We show different sides of ourselves to everyone, but our true self remains entirely within us. The intimate close-ups, repeating monologues, and merged faces capture this inevitable human condition through striking black-and-white cinematography.

Incredible. Bergman is the goat. Great exploration of the masks we wear vs the reality of what actually lies under the surface

10/10 A surreal journey through the human mind/psyche. I love the symbolic shots, more so the way it was filmed in general. It’s so captivating and has a beautiful soundtrack, not to mention splendid acting, writing, and directing. Can’t stress how big of an impression this left.

Very compelling to think about

This was pretty unbelievable. In less than 90 minutes, Bergman pulls off something that still feels bold today. The last act had me confused and then realized that’s clearly the point. It slowly unravels identity right in front you. Strange and powerful.

"No! I'm not like you. I don't feel like you. I'm Sister Alma, I'm just here to help you. I'm not Elisabet Vogler. You are Elisabet Vogler."

I tried really hard to grasp this movie. I tried reading other reviews and opinions, but I cannot help to like it. I was left confused and wondering when it would end. It was barely over an hour, but I couldn't find myself intrigued in any part of the story. There were continuous monologues, and I honestly lost interest after Alma confesses to raping a young boy. That part was just glossed over.

I understand it is a dark confession, but that isn't something I really wanted to keep my attention on. The acting was good and carried the concept well, but the 'plot twist' didn't even surprise me because of how much out of it I was.

Maybe if I rewatch the film I could better understand it like others have, but I don't feel like bothering. And maybe that will be on me for not truly trying to grasp the film's intent, but nothing reaches out to me to do so.
