i just adored this film, it is a fascinating character study on childhood trauma and the psychology of paraphilias, while putting the audience in the shoes of a voyeuristic spectator themselves
it’s age did not hurt it at all either, the writing and camera work is still fantastic

Here voyeurism itself looks outwards and inwards, confounding perpetrator and victim, filmmaker and viewer, camera and phallic weapon, while observing a pathology as metacinematic as it is psychiatric.

a genuine underrated slasher pioneer

mark was soooo good. so obsessed, so frightening, and the film didn’t need the gore to be entertaining and horrifying!!! and god i love technicolor!!

Ahead of its time with the meta elements on filmmaker and audience, the audience’s compliancy in the act by watching it. As well as the themes of trauma, which seems to be explored in every horror movie now; there’s also self-reflective elements from Michael Powell in the script

Mark was disturbing at the onset. A very curious tale of how childhood trauma and the sins of our parents can impact who we become as adults. The ending was completely unexpected!

far ahead of its time. one of the first pov serial killer movies! this film really feels like it could be late 60s or early 70s, i can’t believe it was filmed in 1959!!

amazing film. not terror but quite a good suspense.

I see this came out around the same time as Psycho, and this definitely stands on its own. Great performances all around, but the actor who played Mark captured that character perfectly. Most horror/thriller films around that time period don't hold up to today's standards, but this definitely does.

Before Psycho this movie was the first ever slasher and started a new wave of films after it.
But this was a very good serial killer thriller but as a slasher in hole it doesn’t have that unique formula that makes some slashers awesome.

This movie was actually pretty good for being the first ever slasher movie. Today I wouldn’t call this a slasher but the story is interesting and unique.

Contextually and in a historical sense, this is a very important and influential movie in the horror genre. By today’s standards, it would either bore high-octane horror hounds or turn off casual audiences. A very niche audience for this one.
