Joker: Folie à Deux
a cinematic masterpiece. i usually don’t like musicals but this actually hit. gaga & joaquin were so fucking good together. phoenix having to go through that physique still blows my mind. the cinematography was truly surreal, every shot, every camera movement was so precise and elegant. that long oner towards the climax was ridiculous. composition, lighting, & color pallet never missed. the makeup, costume design, sound design, set design, & score were all outstanding. got goosebumps when gaga & phoenix started singing “close to you” by carpenters. so much art in one film. wish we had a little more action, but still really enjoyed every second of it. 9 / 10

At one point Arthur says “just talk to me, stop singing” and I knew we were on the same page. This didn’t work at all for me and not a single song in this is memorable.

Not as good as the first joker, but not as bad as the reviews make it out to be. Didn’t love it, but didn’t hate it.

I actually had faith in this movie, even when they announced it was a musical i didn’t mind. The plot was boring and discredits the first movie, the pacing was horrible, the songs were so random and pointless. This is contender for worst movie of the year with the crow/borderlands

Just gonna pretend this was all in Arthur’s head it didn’t feel like his character at all it felt like I was watching something else gaga was also too much it just felt like it was her movie at times but holy shit that ending :( it was uncalled for horrible it just wasn’t Arthur

Lady Gaga ruins everything that she touches... My god this movie was a train wreck. First time I’ve had to walk out of a movie. Puts a tainted stain on the beautiful first movie. Shame on you dc for making another flop. Who thought making a joker musical was a good idea?

What a breakingly beautiful film. Joaquin Phoenix is such an amazing actor, and brings that same dedication he showed in the first film. The musical scenes were also incredible, and were able to portray emotions words simply could not. I highly recommend for fans of the original!

Better than people make it out to be. It's built like a comic, each page spotlighting the one and only Joaquin Phoenix. I'm not a musical guy but by the end, it all felt worth it. The cinematography, score and sets, 'blew' me away. I love how ironically funny Arthur Fleck is and how the psychological and fan material is told. I got chills making up theories. Gaga does a decent job with mystery and musicalness. I like how they made sure it was a Joker movie by having Harlee look like Arthur's identical twin. The casting all around was great. What some people take as boring, I take as sombre and educational. A love letter to the actor, the character, and the art.

6.8 - This isn’t bad, y'all just don’t like seeing yourselves on screen. It’s absolutely heavy handed - it completely belabors its point, essentially screaming “JOKER IS NOT THE HERO.” But I give Todd Phillips the biggest of props for making that point & sticking to it. Telling WB, the audience, & whoever else “hey, you’re perverting my message & this character.”
I absolutely loved it for about 75%. I lost it a little with Joker’s courtroom resolution, & I have very mixed feelings on the ending, though it felt extremely telegraphed. I wish there would have been a little more subtlety, a little more resolution to some of the victims of the first movie, & a little tighter script in places. I love the use of the musical sequences strictly as the vehicle for Arthur & Lee’s folie a deux, I think it’s the perfect way to integrate that angle. And I think using Lee as the clear stand in for the fanboy audiences is a smart move, though it’s clearly hurt some feelings.
I don’t think it’s the near masterpiece that the first was, but I respect the hell out of it.
P.S. I’m going to choose to not believe that the final scene is not a direct link to Nolan’s universe and is more of an homage to the best version of the Joker character we’ve had yet, because the plot holes are lengthy. But if it is meant to tie them directly, I also respect that and the fact that we already know Arthur is as unreliable of a narrator as they come. Will definitely be interested in whether Phillips ever addresses it directly.

Without any change of scenery other than a prison cell and a court room, the constant singing on top of it all makes it extremely dull. You wait for the plot to build and it never does. A pointless watch as the love story, the court trial, and his insanity all has no meaning.

I was disappointed. The concept of musical is exploited badly, the lyrics don't advance the plot, and the choreography is minimalist. The film is pompous and doesn't give us any new information either about the characters or the world around them, it really has nothing to say. :(
