The vibe was super cool.

i’m rating it meh because i remember seeing the movie but i couldn’t tell you a single scene that stood out to me. fun take on horror and fairy tales but that’s about all i can say

i don’t get the hate this film receives. it surprised me, it was incredible and had the perfect amount of creepiness. i’m usually not a fan of adaptations but this one really deserves some compliments.

I expected a traditional fairy tale, but got a deeply unsettling dive into the occult instead.

The Director’s Eye:
The gloomy atmosphere is perfect. Studying these haunting, fog-drenched European woods gave me fantastic visual inspiration. As a Methodist, the heavy witchcraft and satanic imagery were deeply disturbing. Yet, it effectively portrays the corrupting nature of evil and how dabbling in dark forces taints the soul. The synth-heavy score makes the forest feel completely alien.

The Cuts:
The pacing is incredibly sluggish; the middle really dragged for me. Twisting a classic cautionary tale into a cynical story of empowerment through witchcraft completely abandons the wholesome, family-centric moral of the original story.

Verdict:
Visually striking, but leans way too heavily into dark, occult themes for my traditional tastes. Skip it.

Favorite Line: “I am doing you a favor by getting rid of him.”

Not horror at all. So don’t go into it thinking it’s one or you’ll be disappointed. But, great depiction of the Grimm Fairytale. Well done and surprisingly sweet. It makes sense that they renamed it because this was focused on Gretel’s “awakening”

An interesting reimagining of the classic fairy tale. It was paced a little slow, but the atmosphere and film style were super solid.

The additions to the story worked really well. I'd love to see more of the Grimm Brothers stories told in this style.
