Buddy was honestly much more of a dark comedy than a straight-up horror movie, although it definitely has some solid gore sprinkled throughout. I say that because I personally wasn’t really scared—it’s kind of hard to be terrified when everything is literally sunshine, rainbows, bright colors, and cheerful children’s television energy 😭. If anything, Buddy is more unsettling than genuinely scary, which honestly works perfectly for what the movie is going for. Now, would this movie have terrified the absolute shit out of me as a child? Absolutely 😭. So definitely show your kids this movie! 😂

In all seriousness, I think one of the best things about this movie is that it completely understands how ridiculous its own premise is and refuses to take itself too seriously. The concept could have easily become stupid in the wrong hands, but instead, the movie fully leans into the absurdity of it all, and honestly? It works. There are so many moments where you’re just sitting there thinking, what the actual fuck am I watching?—including the moment when Buddy literally gives himself a BBL 🌝💀. Like??? And yet somehow, it fits perfectly within the insane world this movie creates.

The movie also constantly switches between a regular movie format and this old-school, almost ‘90s children’s television show format, and I thought that was one of the coolest parts of it. It really helps sell the feeling that you’re trapped inside this bizarre TV show and adds so much to the childhood nostalgia the movie is playing with. Everything being so colorful, cheerful, and overly bright makes the darker moments feel even more uncomfortable because something about the whole environment just feels… wrong. It genuinely captures that unsettling feeling of taking something innocent from your childhood and twisting it into something disturbing.

That being said, while there was a lot I enjoyed, there were definitely some things I wish the movie had developed more—particularly Hannah’s relationship with her mom. I actually loved the concept of her mother forgetting her daughter but still having this overwhelming feeling that something was wrong. That was genuinely interesting and, at times, really compelling. But I couldn’t help feeling like we were missing pieces of their relationship. Obviously, that’s partially the point—she’s missing her daughter without knowing exactly what she’s missing—but sometimes she would reference things that we, as the audience, had never actually seen.

Like girl, when you started talking about the fucking fish and saying, “You were always brave,” I was like… when?? 😭 What are you talking about? I didn’t see any of that!

I just wish the movie had fleshed out their relationship a little more before her mom straight-up died 🌝. BUT honestly, I can’t even complain too much because her mom was a queen, a baddie, and she was played by the one and only Cristin Milioti, so baby, I simply cannot hate 😍.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see Topher Grace! I really like him, and I personally haven’t seen him in much recently—although that could absolutely just be a me problem 💀. Either way, his character irritated the absolute hell out of me. I wouldn’t even necessarily call him an asshole; he was just genuinely SO annoying. Like sir… your completely normal wife suddenly starts screaming, calling psychics, and becoming increasingly confused because apparently an entire show no longer exists—and you don’t think maybe you should at least hear her out???

I don’t know, maybe I’m crazy, but if I were in that situation, I would immediately be like, “Okay… let me look into this.” And if I found absolutely nothing? THEN, baby, we can discuss therapy 😭. But she just randomly started acting completely out of character, and you didn’t think maybe something deserved to be investigated?? At least entertain the possibility that she might have a point!

I also feel like this movie is going to generate a LOT of theories once more people see it, because there were definitely moments where I was questioning whether anyone was actually living in the real world. Everything outside of the television-show elements was still so colorful and bright that it almost felt artificial. It still gave the impression that they were somehow in a movie too.

For a while, I genuinely thought they were going to reveal that the adults were Hannah and Oliver grown up, having forgotten everything that happened to them. Obviously, that wasn’t the case, but I definitely think the movie leaves enough weird details and unanswered questions for people to start coming up with theories about what was actually going on.

The ending itself is also a cliffhanger, which can definitely be annoying, especially when a movie leaves you with more questions than answers. But honestly? It didn’t really bother me that much. It very clearly feels like they’re setting up more movies, and if a sequel happens, I would absolutely check it out.

Overall, I really enjoyed Buddy. I would definitely recommend it if you’re into dark comedies with some horror elements and decent gore, but don’t get this shit twisted—this is a comedy 💀. My theater was literally busting out laughing every five minutes. The movie does a really good job mixing its genres, the overall concept is unique and interesting, and it plays with childhood nostalgia incredibly well.

And honestly, I think that’s where the movie becomes the most unsettling: taking something that feels so familiar and innocent—especially for people who grew up watching cheerful children’s shows like Barney—and making you look at it in a completely different way.

Buddy isn’t necessarily going to terrify you, but it will absolutely make you uncomfortable… and sometimes make you laugh your ass off immediately afterward 💀.
