Y’all lied. “Goriest,” “creepiest,” “should be banned”? PLEASE. This isn’t horror; it’s a goofy kids’ adventure movie with monsters and a little blood. Amazing, original premise, but terrible execution. I expected horror and got Jumanji. So underwhelming.

8.3 - I had so much fun with this.

I kept the expectations low & they were blown away. Not to mention watching in a 90% full theater (with no kids!) elevated it significantly.

It has a very fun & wacky (but obvious, if that makes sense?) concept, but it’s executed so cleanly. The 90s nostalgia vibes, mirroring the children’s’ tv shows of the era, are immaculately executed. Fun & funny set pieces, goofy characters, & gratuitous but not absurd gore & violence all meshed shockingly well.

I think what I may appreciate the most is that you can truly watch it in two different ways. If you just want it to be funny/spoofy gory slightly psychedelic horror, it can be and you can have a good time. But if you want to make the effort to actually see what is being spoofed, how deep some of the commentary is on our current political climate, & how flawlessly Buddy himself can be substituted for the predatory villains we actually have to deal with on way too large a scale currently, it reaches that next level of intelligence & fun.

I really wish I would have gotten back to see this a second time to watch it start to finish through that political lens before my local theaters switched over to only singalong versions, but this is absolutely one to revisit when it’s streamable.
