8.4 - almost love. Very funny & provides way more drama than expected but balances well. Wright gives maybe a career performance. I had some questions at choices made at the end - did they underscore or cheapen the message? Also think it could have pushed boundaries even more.

One of the best movies of the year. It’s funny, sad, touching…just a mixed bag of emotions. The cast is exceptional, the score hits the moments in the right way, and the story is almost perfect. It pokes major fun at today’s cultural beats, but the end didn’t land for me. 9/10

Really enjoyed this movie. Laughed so much and it had a good message to it as well. I wasn’t sure at the start but it definitely grew on me as it got going!

I probably wouldn't watch it again, but I don't think I'll ever forget it either. The acting, for starters...Jeffrey Wright, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, and whoever else, all carried such a captivating amount of wit and charisma. Heavy on acting and dialogue, but not so heavy on plot progression, it feels like watching one plot path split into three, all merging back together at the end. Themes and topics like racial stereotypes, self-identity, social/cultural commodities, family dynamics, and the list goes on...all make sure to leave their mark in the form of satire, absurd realism, and harsh truths.

Great movie, excellently done. My one grip, is that it felt like it went on much longer than it had to. Towards the end it felt like they didn’t know where to take it. Would’ve been great at 90 minutes, but 2 hours just felt like they were trying to meet a time requirement.

Excellent. A proper social commentary. Fused with humor and drama, an interesting B-plot, paced so well. The score for so well. My only gripe is that Monk feels like one of the only level-headed person on this society. But his ego levels him to everyone else while still [1/2]

Smart, poignant, and funny, with great casting. While some reviews cite tediousness with the family drama, it's all meant to be part of Monk's wild journey as Stagg R. Leigh. But this film honestly could've dug deeper, and while I get the ending’s intent, I wasn't a fan of it.

that was so complex. so many interesting conversations happening in the space of 117 minutes. and so many good philosophical evaluations as powerful one-liners. the dialogue kinda blew me away. yeah wow

Some very heartwarming moments, but my enjoyment was hindered by the audience; it felt like they were either an extension of the movie’s satire, or completely unaware that the movie was criticizing them. Everyone was trying to outdo eachother in proving their own self-awareness.

A clever Satire on a multitude of stereotypes, including Black culture, consumerism, advertising, and Hollywood.

Brilliant character writing with a lot of cynical observational comedy moments amidst a family driven drama. Lacked a bit of depth at some points, but nevertheless is a fun and thought provoking movie at the same time and switches emotions on a dime in well done fashion.

Another installment of “my roommates and I wanted to watch a movie, but had no idea what we wanted to watch, so we just searched Amazon Prime until we found something interesting.” And we COOKED on this one. This movie is fantastic!! The social commentary is so pertinent and compelling, and it is backed up by such outstanding performances. Jeffrey Wright did an amazing job as Monk, and he was definitely the standout, but everyone did a great job.

This movie is also just hilarious. A lot of the time, the humor is more subtle, but there’s also a lot of in-your-face humor, and the film handles both so well. However, there’s also a lot of drama, and the way it balances both is super impressive. It’s just a super entertaining movie from beginning to end - I really enjoyed my time with it. And for a directoral debut?? Awesome.

A complex representation of the black experience in America. I also really liked the unseriousness of the ending. We (the audience) are supposed to be in on the joke! We know what Monk would’ve said in his acceptance speech. This isn’t that movie. We’re supposed to already get it

only other 2023 best picture nominee other than anatomy of a fall to rely on dialogue and characters instead of visuals and grandeur - and have it pay off. it is suprisingly funny despite handling heavy topics and sterling k. knight is fire both physically and characterwise. enjoyable from start to finish

an incredibly smart film with a perfect script and premise; as someone who enjoys writing, i was entertained by the corporate and artificial nuances behind successful versus passionate works. the performances, cinematography, and music are all great, even if the ending falls flat

Really great movie

that was amazing! such a simple film filled with so many emotions. Theres a lot of parts to the story to break down, but how it makes fun of the social construct if race is perfect, the irony throughout the movie is even better. Emotional parts are raw, what the character wants!
