Little Witch Academia
The Great TV Rewatch
This show means so, so much to me.
Firstly, I’m gonna talk about how this show has had an impact on me over the years. Then, I’m gonna actually talk about the show, which will have spoilers
Back in summer of 2020, I was stuck questioning who I even was while I had an iPad with unrestricted internet access and pandemic policies were still lingering around. They were relaxed, but they still existed.
One part of summer 2020 I can vividly remember was how much I changed as a person. Summer 2020 was the period I became an anime fan. It all started when I watched Yugioh, however where it really went up to eleven was when I first watched LWA. There was practically no anime on. Netflix except for Pokemon and random anime from the 2000s. Except for LWA. Within watching the first episode I was hooked. I showed my parents the first episode (Something I would NEVER do these days), I bought the manga, and I definitely watched more episodes.
One nostalgic part of the summer of 2020 linked to LWA was my and my family’s trip to Bergen. As opposed to our one before Covid, we drove the entire route. This was like a 10 hour drive, and man was my soundtrack crazy. I played the Umaru Chan ED 51 fucking times in one day. However, I look at me listening to that song in bad faith. The song from the drive that has aged the best was the Part 2 opening theme. Holy shit is it still great. The most nostalgic part of it for me was the part that starts with the lyric ‘越えてかなきゃいけないんだ過去の自分’. When translated, the lyric is ‘I have to go beyond my past self’. Quite ironic, as I’m talking about my nostalgia for this show, however, I am inspired by it, and I owe it to this show for changing me.
Other than my nostalgia for 2020, this show has also affected me in other ways.
This was the first time I really participated in a large (not that large but big enough) online community. It lead to my immunity against going down the right wing grifter rabbit hole, my future as a game developer, and my queer awakening.
This show changed my life for the better.
Now, we are coming to the part where I actually talk about the show itself.
Spoiler warning.
Part 1 (Episodes 1-13) review:
This is the worse part of LWA. Sure, it’s still good, but Part 2 is definitely better. Still, I am going to review it.
A lot of the episodes in this part are forgettable. They are mainly filler. Only 3 of the 7 lost words of Arcturus are revived, which is a good thing, as we still have another 12 episodes of LWA, but they weren’t spread out well. The episodes they were revived in were E1, E11, and E13. This isn’t spread out well enough. Not having a word revived except for the first one in the first five episodes is a good thing, as we need to set up the dynamic of Luna Nova, but E6-10 (except for 8) are filler. They could’ve easily fit the second word in the Forgettable Part™️, but they didn’t.
Secondly, this is more of a gripe with the whole series, but Hannah and Barbara were some of the most fucking annoying characters I have ever seen in my life. It makes sense for there to be a bully character in the show, but at what point is it a justified skip?
I did like seeing them get fucking slimed out in E12 tho
Let’s talk about my lowest rated and highest rated episodes of this part:
Lowest rated episode: Orange Submariner (E7)
The thing with this episode is that sure, it has a good premise, but it’s filler enough that it’s just Forgettable™️. However, let’s actually talk about the episode.
This episode has some quite high stakes. Akko will get expelled if she fails her next exam, and she accidentally flushed her professor down the drain. Literally. The professor is a fish. However, I don’t think it’s a good idea to have such high stakes early on. E8 worked, because while Luna Nova was about to get destroyed by mushrooms, I believe that it was a dream (The ending shows that if it is a dream is up to interpretation). The stakes of E7 don’t really work for me because of the fact that they are real, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to have such high stakes so early. The high stakes in Part 2 and the last few episodes of Part 1 work because they are later in the show and part.
Apart from the high stakes that I’m not much of a fan of, I like how Akko gives up one of the charges in the magic battery to save a school of fish, as I am a fan of when actual human decency is shown in media (like in Superman (2025)). Plus, my favorite part of the episode is when Akko is about to get expelled at the end, but she shows up having saved the professor, and she is saved from being expelled, but Professor Finnelan fights back against the school’s decision, and Ursula talks right back to Finnelan. Really fucking good section, and definitely my favorite part of this otherwise forgettable episode.
Rating: 7.1 (I’d say it’s slightly worse than E2)
Highest rated episode: Samhain Magic Festival
Holy shit, this episode is stunningly good.
It’s definitely not the best episode in the show, but it is definitely the best episode of Part 1.
Visuals are beautiful, especially in the second and third acts. The shot where the true ghost of Varajoha is revealed is what I believe to be one of the most beautiful shots in the entire anime.
Apart from visuals, the plot is amazing too. It makes sense to have high stakes in this, as it is the finale of Part 1, and they definitely delivered on those high stakes. Having Akko decide to do the sacrifice differently by trying to make the ghost of Varahoja happy definitely set some expectations, and they were definitely delivered on.
The entire section with the festival is nothing short of amazing. This episode deserves its rating.
Rating: 9.8
Part 2 (Episodes 14-25) review:
This part of the show is extremely juicy.
You have a SHIT ton of story in this. Barely any filler. Everything advances. Especially in the Final Five, which is what I consider my favorite run of episodes in TV history. So much so, I have individual reviews for them WITH spoilers below.
Final Five Reviews:
E21: Discipline
This is what you call a good episode.
Now that I am free from the shackles of having to try to make spoiler free reviews, I am ready to write the review I've wanted to write for a bit now.
This episode is really good. It's definitely not perfect, but it's really good. So good, that it deserves a 9.9 from me. Crazy, right?
Let's actually talk about this episode.
You've probably seen a pattern from my reviews where every single episode where they revive a word is really good. This episode is no different. You have Akko going against Ursula's wishes with Croix taking her to the Wagandea tree for Akko to climb it, even though the buds are about to open releasing the pollen, which can get rid of a witches ability to use magic. The fight between Ursula and Croix is also some crazy shit. The stakes are so high and because it's later in the show, they're justified.
This episode also had me sobbing at the end. Akko eventually being saved by Ursula right when the buds start opening is so fucking heroic. Then Ursula and Akko being swept away and Ursula wishing for Akko's magic power to not be rid of shows the love Ursula still has for Akko. Then, when Akko thanks Ursula while they are on the ground, wounded with the Shiny Rod lighting up for the sixth word gets me sobbing SOOOOOO much, and the fact that the sixth word activates a healing tool to heal up Akko and Ursula is just so fitting.
This is a really good episode, it's not perfect, but it is definitely 9.9 good.
Rating: 9.9
E22: Things We Said Today
Holy shit.
This episode is the definition of peak.
The dread created by those floating cube thingies in the sky, Croix unexpectedly revealing the truth to Akko, and the stunning visuals of the last few scenes, those are some of the things that make this episode perfect.
As I said in my spoiler free review of this episode, I believe it’s better it’s better than Ozymandias (even though I haven’t watched it). Plus, I believe it strikes the perfect balance of having an interesting enough plot (too much can equal filler) and story progression (too much can equal overwhelming), while having the perfect amount of dread that is present in the Final Five.
This episode also ties beautifully into the next one, with Akko running away after learning the truth. Seeing the credits at the end left me stunned, bewildered, amazed, at how they pulled off this episode. It is perfection.
Rating: 10.0
E23: Yesterday
They did it again. Another perfect episode.
Let’s start off: The flashback showing Chariot’s backstory is incredible. Seeing her strike the moon with the Shiny Arc, then seeing it disintegrate was stunning to watch. The story with Chariot and Dream Fuel Spirit was so saddening, because how would you feel if an amazing technology to make your viewers happy damaged them in the long run?
Like I said in my spoiler free review, the reveals hit like a truck, the tears make you feel very much the same, and the final scene brings you enough dread that you are both excited and scared for the final two episodes.
The conversation between Akko and Diana at the cafe with all the reveals was one of the most emotional scenes in LWA that I’ve seen.
Plus, that final scene with Croix revealing what she’s been working on this entire time to Chariot is one of the most dreadful cliffhangers I’ve ever seen.
This episode is one of my favorite TV episodes of all time, and it is only beaten out by other episodes from this show.
Perfection.
Rating: 10.0
E24: A Road To Arcturus
I am stunned by this episode.
They managed to continue their streak of perfect episodes.
First, let’s start with the continuation of the cliffhanger from last time. Having no scene before the opening theme really sets the tone for this episode. The fight between Chariot and Croix is some eye candy. The other professors coming to rescue, but then Croix deactivating the Sorcerer’s Stone is one of the craziest twists I’ve seen in this show.
Then, the students traveling back to Luna Nova with Akko, but then the Leyline going down is some crazy shit. The events of E1 are being repeated again, and I am here for this.
Seeing Croix extract the “world altering magic” from the seal, then seeing that it only makes bubbles is the definition of karma. It reminds me of what has been repeated a lot in this show: you don’t get the things you dream for, you get the things you work for.
Then, we come to what I think is one of the best scenes in LWA. Akko finally meeting Chariot. Holy shit. It is so, SO fucking emotional seeing her finally meet her idol. I cried during that scene.
Oh yeah and there’s also Akko reviving the seventh word, but it is like midnight and I have school in the morning, so I’m gonna refrain from talking about it too much, but it was a good scene.
Though, that ending? With the warning sound. This shit instilled so much dread in me even as someone rewatching this that I was scared to watch the next episode.
Great job Trigger, yet ANOTHER banger.
Rating: 10.0
E25: Changing at the Edge of The World
I knew that at some point I had to write this review. Before rewatching this, I was both ready and not ready at the same time. I was ready for another episode of LWA, but I was not ready for the FINALE.
I don’t want to accept it, but this is probably the series finale. I’ll keep clamoring on for a new season, but I know that is not likely.
Apart from me not being able to accept that this is the end, let’s talk about the contents of this episode.
This is yet another perfect episode. I don’t like giving out 10s like candy, but this and the other 3 episodes that have 10s deserve their ratings.
First, the beginning without the opening theme and just the logo with the missile flying up hits like a bullet cargo train filled to the brim with boulders.
Next, the witches banding together to stop the missile is some great shit. Nothing special, just teamwork. Then, them becoming the New Nine Witches is some of the coolest shit I’ve seen in this show. Having the name alone makes you a legend, and that sleek, elegant, white clothing design is some great shit.
Then, you have the final battle. It is the definition of peak. Akko and Diana fighting the missile is some eye candy on its own, and to top that off, it is literally like the Avengers: Endgame final battle. You know, all the people from different episodes cheering them on like Annabel, the cafe worker, the other students, and more. This is some POWERFUL shit.
Then, Akko and Diana delivering the final strike to the missile had me crying over the fact it’s all ending so soon. Akko lending the Shiny Rod to the stars had me crying even more. This plus the entire world becoming happy again is probably the most beautiful ending they could deliver.
Then, the final scene with Akko finally flying a broom was such a big payoff. This episode had me applauding it when it ended.
I’m not ready for LWA to end, but it probably has, and it’s time to smile because it happened.
Rating: 10.0
This show definitely isn’t perfect. It has some weak spots, and certain parts haven’t aged well. I don’t like giving things a 10, as it’s just corny to do that and just easy to mindlessly give out like candy, but I owe my life to this show, and it is easily my favorite show of all time.
Lyonne, Trigger. ❤️
