DTF St. Louis
What started as a predictable detective series turned into something deeply human. The characters don't feel like TV tropes; they feel like people youβve actually met (or been). It captures that raw insecurity of trying to connect with someone without being overly dramatic about it. Itβs just a really sincere reflection on how complicated it is to navigate desire and isolation at the same time.

The show isnβt for everyone, but for those that are able to respect the story will find compelling themes centered around male loneliness, interpersonal connection, stale relationships, and fatherhood.

Down to...what in the f*ck? I honestly wasn't expecting any of this. I wasn't expecting a detective spin, nor was I expecting a gut-wrenchingly intimate yet comedic approach to love, sex, mental health, masculinity, and friendship. Oh, and I definitely wasn't expecting to cry. The premise is simple but powerful and extremely relevant, given the ever-growing epidemic of male loneliness. Brilliant performances, especially from Harbour. Phenomenal writing, although more so in the journey than in the mystery or conclusion. Great directing and a decent soundtrack. Another hit from HBO.

DTF St. Louis gets off to a remarkably strong start. The performances are excellent, but what impressed me most was the precision of the writing: the dialogue, the mutual insinuations, and even the smallest details in the characters' body language are handled with real care. There is also a clear sense that the series is laying the groundwork for a significant twist later on, which gives these opening episodes an added sense of purpose.
The main criticism I keep seeing is that it is "too slow", but I find that complaint rather telling. It feels less like a flaw in the series and more like a symptom of the TikTok and Instagram Reels era, where people seem unable to hold their attention for longer than fifteen seconds. Even films and television now increasingly feel as though they are being chopped into a string of short sketches to accommodate that shrinking attention span.
In any case, the first two episodes of DTF St. Louis promise one of the most impressive series I have seen this year. Whether that opinion will change once I have seen the remaining episodes, I cannot yet say - but so far, it has been genuinely excellent.

I think this series will get immensely less attention and praise then it deserves, but I was wholly in awe of the story telling.

super fascinating premise and i loved the mystery of the story - keeps you guessing with the detectives the entire show right up until the ending - the three main cast all absolutely killed their roles especially jason bateman

I need to sit with it more. I liked aspects. David harbor and Jason Bateman are wonderful in it. And it has some nice messages about loneliness and how sexuality can blur those lines. But the tone and mystery are just so weird. And the ending felt very anti climactic to me. I wouldnβt recommend this to a friend.

Really donβt even know how to describe this show. One of the weirdest seasons of television I have ever seen. But I will say, kept my attention the entire time for better or for worse.

Watched episode 1, very much not my show. Lighting is moody, music is dramatic, conversation is very boring, plot is slow. I can see why other ppl would like it tho.

I liked that this show didnβt act like every other detective murder story and actually allowed for alot of vulnerability within the character β¦ but my gosh the ending is Dull as hell which kinda ruined the rest for me.
