The Zone of Interest
Amazing filmmaking but tough watch. The epitome of “show don’t tell.” Most effective part was the contrast between the family’s ideal life scored by the distant sounds of the atrocities from the camp. Interesting choice of Nazi POV to humanize the situation

8.9 - harrowing & heavy watch not helped by its pace or runtime which really make you sit with what you’re witnessing. The details tell the story - the sound, the careful & casual dialogue, the way it’s filmed. A movie of show not tell, making it unique in a saturated subgenre.

Some of the greatest sound design ever put to film. Imagery is so immensely powerful yet never shows the atrocities first hand. The filmmaking is innovative and mesmerising. The way the screenplay conveys such emotion with hardly an actual plot is beyond impressive. Timely.

The more I think back about that movie, the more it is interesting. Memory seems to wipe the parts of the movie which appear less relevant to leave you only with the terrible clash of reality and pure horror. The music is insane and the beauty of the picture quite disturbing.

I keep seeing the term “banality of evil” and that’s exactly what this encapsulates. It’s still very intense and unnerving, and the sound design is insanely impressive.

A haunting and incredible film that truly deserved its two Oscar wins. The sound design is something else in this movie and adds to the overall experience. I cried during the final scene as it was truly horrific reliving the horrors of the Holocaust. A must watch

I didn’t enjoy this at all. It felt like I was just watching the everyday life of someone. Sure the sound was great, but that’s pretty much it. I had to put it on 2x speed at the end just to get through the movie. One of the most boring movies I’ve ever watched. 2/10

The Zone of Interest
Definitely a heavy subject and the way the movie handles the cruel view of the other side of the wall has been perfectly. However, this movie isn’t it for me. Missed a direction and feels too long by not having any. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Whew, not light viewing. Very effective and haunting movie. Incredible how the sound design conveyed horror without any overt visuals

Incredibly well done. This is one of those movies that once finished, I immediately ran to Reddit to read people’s interpretations. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before but I will recommend it to everyone.

No on screen violence but still somehow able to give you a sense of the scale of the holocaust. One of those things that are hard to imagine. Recommend for sure if interested in ww2 strong performances and uniquely indirect-delivery of the horrors of the holocaust.

Watching this on an airplane is NOT the ideal viewing situation for this movie. When the guy sitting next to you is multitasking watching The Boys and struggling with level 1 of Angry Birds World Tour, this is not the easiest movie to focus on.
This is a much more subtle look at the atrocities of the Holocaust, aiming to answer how the German people possibly could’ve let something like this occur. But make no mistake, the message of this movie has relevancy and reach far beyond just the Holocaust.

I keep seeing “show don’t tell” but no.. hardly ever are you actually shown something, you hear most of the atrocities and there are very few moments where you get a glimpse of the actual horror — other than that you are being told through dialogue from the father whats happening
The sound work is great and I guess the story is alright however it was a chore to even follow considering the subtitles on my version blended in with a majority of the scenes leaving me blind to what was being said a lot of the times
Not awful but I was expecting… more?

The subtitles were done very poorly, which could have just been from the version I watched (on Amazon though so idk), but it made the film difficult to follow. Some really beautiful cinematography and sound design but I’ve seen better films and books that cover this topic.

the subtly but persistent parallels between the family’s life and what was going on on the other side of the wall were atrocious but showed perfectly how everything actually worked.
what really impressed me was the soundtrack, absolutely terrorising.
very well done movie.
