The Woman in the Yard
3.6 - I expected this to be horrible, & it was just bad, so I guess that’s a win?
There’s definitely more to the story than the trailer implied, & Danielle Deadwyler holds down her lead role well. But a messy story & an extreme lack of effective scare moments still make it more of a disappointment than worthwhile.
It’s a movie that feels like it thinks it’s much smarter than it is. And it’s really just more bleak than anything else. There’s a decent amount of creepiness early, but so many scenes drag on way too long & the character actions get overly repetitive. Then it starts getting into psychological & reality questions & pretty much fully loses its way. (Never mind that it’s also so darkly lit you can’t see much of the second half clearly.) And then ends up being mostly recycled trauma horror tropes in the end with an ending that wants to be ambiguous & really isn’t.
If you want a short horror for a date night maybe this is the move (at least that was 90% of my crowd), but I think there’s many better options out right now.

Seeing the Blumhouse logo gives me anxiety, not for the horror but for the idiocy in nearly every project they produce. I guess it's to keep a younger audience, although I noticed a slight improvement in this. Not so much in the story but the errors, as cliche as they may be. I love the allegories for depression, guilt, and grief, and the directing all around felt trendy yet stylised, especially when it came to messaging. I could catch little plot details and horror references to films like 'Nosferatu'. Unfortunately, I lost interest at the halfway mark due to the overly hyperbolic characterisations and story.
