The Lighthouse

Two men fart and squabble in a lighthouse.

I wrote a 10 page essay on this film in which I explored its mise-en-scene, productions behind-the-scenes, and it’s derived story and deeper themes. I had to have watched this movie through at least 10 times in a week. I think I’m obligated to rank it higher because of this fact.

A film student’s wet dream.

I think it does a great job at portraying insanity and a descent into it, Robert Pattinson displays such a convincing performance and it’s really the acting that mainly drives this movie. Willem Defoe is such perfect casting for an old crazy isolated lighthouse guy, these two guys are the only people who could do it. It is a little slow at some points but it’s really great at dialogue which surprised me, so it’s not all that slow or poorly paced. Really good movie in my opinion.

Also I don’t think he liked that seagull, just a hot take.

My score: 8.5/10

The film was art - I’m not sure I want a film that purely exists for the idea of being art. I liked it because it was provocative and made me think but it wasn’t necessarily enjoyable

I’m only satisfied because of the seagulls at the end. I held a grudge the whole movie after that scene 😂
