The Five-Year Engagement
I liked the movie, but it felt like it was mischaracterized to me as a comedy when most of it was really sad. This movie is a good watch about how perfect timing is an illusion and that all you need to make love work is the willingness and commitment to do so.

The Five-Year Engagement
Rating: 6.2/10
The Five-Year Engagement is a charming but overlong and undisciplined romantic comedy. With a great cast and relatable premise, the film explores the challenges of real-life relationships. While the chemistry between Jason Segel and Emily Blunt is believable, the film's bloated runtime and meandering script hold it back.
Highlights
- Relatable Premise: The film thoughtfully explores how career opportunities and unforeseen obstacles can derail relationships.
- Charming Leads: Jason Segel and Emily Blunt have wonderful chemistry, making their on-screen couple genuinely charming.
- Scene-Stealing Supporting Cast: Chris Pratt and Alison Brie's whirlwind romance provides hilarious moments.
Criticisms
- Punishing Runtime: The film's long runtime feels like a slog, with unnecessary subplots and repetitive conflicts.
- Lack of Tight Editing: Improvisation leads to bloated and self-indulgent scenes that need trimming.
- Frustrating Decisions: The lead characters' decisions can be grating, making it hard to remain invested in their relationship.
Verdict
The Five-Year Engagement has a fantastic cast and solid premise, but poor pacing and editing hold it back. With some trimming, this could have been a great 90-minute movie. As it stands, the film is a frustrating watch that proves even great chemistry can't overcome a poorly paced script.
