The Bridge on the River Kwai
Full of suspense, action, and riveting drama, Bridge on the River Kwai is a triumph of cinema. The performances by Holden and Hayakawa were excellent but ultimately overshadowed by Guinness, truly giving the performance of his career. David Lean was truly a master. 9/10

5/10 Enjoyed parts (Soldier Camaraderie/Bridge Planing/Side-plot), if reduced to 1hr 40mins would be a captivating film. “Guinness” was outstanding and worth a watch for him alone.

More bleak and thought-provoking than I expected. The battle of wills between Nicholson & Saito is a great central hook. The visuals & sets are gorgeously-composed. The ending is masterclass in suspense. Fascinating look at the way good intentions can warp into something ugly.

My jaw dropped at the end - did not really expect the twist and came into this thinking it would just be some stock-standard movie about POWs. Pleasantly surprised, compelling.

My Rating: 8/10
Nominated for 8 Oscar’s and won 7. One of the best war films I’ve seen. Pretty intense at the end. Kept my attention throughout.

Watched this classic from the 50s in an effort to even slightly better understand the lesser-known WWII campaign in Burma where my grandfather served in the Army.

Really between like and meh on this one but it’s a decent watch overall. It is slow paced and the flow is a bit all over the place. But the last scene to me captured the essence of war. Madness. Nicholson wants a legacy and realizes his mistake and everyone ends up dead.

This was one of my grandfathers favourite films, and boy did he have taste.
Great performances, mainly by Alec Guiness, with good messages. The highlight for this from me was the differing perspectives of the character’s involved, what they valued most.
How writing should be.

really long and slow. it's not even historically accurate. it's just bad propaganda film at best. though I do whistle that song all the time.

Alec Guinness overshadows everyone else’s great performances. Visually stunning on every front. Paced solidly for such a long endeavour. Practical effects are great. Sets are lived-in and hardened sets make the film feel real. Undoubtedly one of the best war films ever made

My youth, war and cowboy films on a Saturday afternoon. Appreciate it more now than when I was a kid!
