The Book of Clarence
7.6 - An enigma. It takes risks everywhere: camera work, music, genre & art bending & blending, & most notably in its writing & biblical adaptation. Unsure if it’s more righteous or blasphemous. I grew up religious & now am not, so I connected with this in interesting ways.

An odd take on the bible. It's unclear what the final message is supposed to be as they kind of contradict themselves the entire film. They have scenes where they say atheism means you will never be loved by God or Jesus, then the next they literally show God or Jesus loving him

The preview looked interesting but a lot of the humor was in the trailer. Also the movie was comical and light hearted then turned super heavy and religious and felt like a different movie the second half.

At the start of this there’s lots of fun comedy, the style & dialogue work given the setting, most of which has a fun rhythm to it. It takes its time & though the underlying pinning of satire on how race is seen in biblical stories is not lost on me, it doesn’t take it in any…

I went in to this skeptical of potential mockery of Christianity. Instead I thought it was a brilliantly creative story. Comedy sprinkled throughout, an interesting take on different Bible characters and a really good redemption story all while remaining fairly respectful

This movie was a genius mix of hood classics like “Friday” and biblical period pieces like “Ben-Hur.” While not for everybody, it had thought provoking social commentary. It’s a fictional story that takes place along side the traditional Bible story line. Not blasphemous at all.

I honestly don't have a clue what this is. The genre confuses me, the story confuses me, the acting confuses me, the design confuses me, and the cast confuses me. I felt so relieved when it finished. The only thing I know for sure is that they took risks making this. The best thing about this for me was the cinematography and soundtrack. Other than that, it's meaningless to me.

6/10. Not my type of movie. The tone kept going back and forth between serious and satirical and neither really landed for me. Everything but the dialog was done well.

People who are big on religion/the Bible or too technical about it might not like this and call it blasphemous. Frankly, that’s fine. It takes a more mythological & comedic approach to a biblical story with interesting music and camera choices. Lakeith Stanfield is fun to watch.

An interesting take on the influence of Jesus from a different perspective.full of jokes that don’t take away from the message and was a great insight on religion itself

Tried to watch. Couldn’t get through it. Was just weird a twist on the story of Jesus.

I found this movie confusing and didn’t understand really what the message was supposed to be. Still a great cast and cinematography though I just don’t understand it and don’t know much about religion.

I enjoyed it because it wasn't at all what I thought it would be...
