Sept. 2024 Rewatch (Director's Edition):
Captures the majesty of space travel and the fear of the unknown like no other Trek film, especially through the visuals and Jerry Goldsmith's excellent score. I never bought into the Decker/Ilia relationship/situation (more in comments)

This was my introduction to star trek and I never went back

Respectfully, it's the definition of meh
The director could have told and made the audience feel everything that he wanted for the scenes if he spent half as much time on the long takes.
Funny enough spending all that time took me out if the scene, and the plot...it was okay

It felt like they had a script for a normal episode and told the actors to just take 4 times as long to deliver their lines to make it movie length. Add in a bunch of unnecessary 5 minute long establishing shots and you’ve got this movie. But it’s still Star Trek

The story was basic. The characters were mainly just there, and for at least 20 minutes it was just staring and sightseeing, however, I didn’t mind too much. I can just listen to that score on its own. Man it’s brilliant.

The filming style reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which I hated. The actors were great, but I was very bored throughout and had no stakes since I watched the Changeling episode before this.

The visuals in this movie were honestly top notch for the time , in my humble opinion! Really the best part of the film for me.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the new characters…I didn’t dislike them, just didn’t like them!

The teleporter incident was wild and horrific…

Interesting idea, terribly executed. Idk if the Director's Cut is any better, but this movie drags like crazy.

Better than its place in history, but not as good as most of the movies that follow. This film translates Star Trek to the big screen very well, but the story gets lost in the gratuitous beauty shots of the Enterprise. It earns the nickname "The Motionless Picture."

So many establishing shots… you could watch the last 20 mins of this movie and get it all lol

Shows its age, not the greatest St movie, but not that bad

A showpiece more than anything. I fell asleep during the movie in the theater as a kid. It’s the only movie I’ve ever done this. Still a good intro to the series and the payoff is ok. Older folks still reference the end in pop culture references.

Honestly not bad, there is a lot of prolonged scenes of certain things but not terrible.

Interesting film, wasn’t expecting too much, but the whole premise was cool
