8.8 - A beautiful, personal, authentic, tender & realistic directorial debut for Eva Victor.

One single (I think?) trailer view a few weeks ago did not set me up for what this was. It took me until the second “act” or “year” to fully buy in, but once I did I was wholly moved by the end.

While I can’t directly relate to the “bad thing” that happens to Agnes, I do completely understand the feeling of isolation you get when something bad happens & the world seems to move on around you at lightning speed while you still can’t completely comprehend your own emotions.

Eva Victor is captivating in her quiet but emotional lead, but John Carroll Lynch is my personal MVP. He provides a very small but extremely pivotal piece of the story, delivering a delicate & kind speech to Agnes that is that perfect blend of the right kind of love at the right time that can really help in trauma recovery & rarely comes from where you’d expect.

It probably needs to be said there are heavy themes here, & the style is also quiet and conversational instead of active, which I know I love but isn’t for everyone.

I don’t know if it has a lot of rewatchability for me personally. And I can’t help but expect that the subject matter will sadly make this unapproachable for too many people, but I hope it gets the love & recognition it deserves.

It’s not one of those movies that stun or scare or excite you a lot, but it’s real. It’s got a sort ordinary-ness to it which makes it good. Even if it’s not relatable to all, you can still connect because we’ve all had bad things happen. Not a fav, but im happy I got to connect.

The film was deeply disturbing, because I saw myself in her—her strangeness, the way she processes, speaks and reflects. The conversation with the old man felt healing, grounding. I wish I had that in my life.

I don’t know how to feel. Bizarre. I don’t know if I liked it or didn’t like it.

wow. this is terrible in the best way. it’s so sad and i think the way it’s made is so real and just.. like, wow. i love their friendship too. and the sandwhich man omg. that part of the story was just, like all i can really say is, wow. i think that this was made perfectly+

So wonderful. The overall story is so beautiful and well-told. The long shots convey such drama and emotion, forcing you to really sit with the reality of what you’re watching. It’s so understated and subtle in so many ways, trusting the viewer to understand. There is a scene where the camera just sits on a house’s facade for minutes as time passes in the film, which brought me to tears knowing the implications.

Victor is so witty and funny in this—the comedic timing of the entire cast is impressive. I just really loved this movie and how well it combined harsh realities with the joy of relationships.

Eva Victor is such a fantastic lead and director and this has me so excited to see what they do next.

I don't want to dislike this, but the longer it went on, the more I started disliking it. For a directorial debut, Eva Victor is a triple threat, not only directing but also writing and starring in her own film. I instantly clicked into the atmosphere and casting for the first 30 minutes or so, and then, unfortunately, I lost interest. The only real carrying factor is its subject matter, which I think was almost perfectly projected. Other than that, the direction and story, or lack thereof, lost my attention and recommendation, as well as rewatchability.

I can’t see myself ever revisiting this film, but it was a very thoughtful experience of showing how life inherently brings grief and a sometimes hopeless feeling search for purpose

the movie had me sit in silence, and it made me feel so much. it is so relatable. until Emily Fightmaster showed up and ruined everything.

Simultaneously felt very grounding and calm but also really scary. Very very good. I would put this in the same category as Janet planet and Anne at 13000 feet. Idk what that is exactly but it gave me the same feeling.

Incredible. 10/10 wouldn’t recommend if you have ptsd cause holy shit I had to take a break and curl up in a ball on my bathroom floor with the way she talks about her trauma in a scene

I think eliminating the “flashback” portion would’ve actually elevated this movie even more, but nevertheless it was raw, emotional, and surprisingly funny

86/100 solid. Slow pace but good story and acting from all. One of those movies where the larger part of the message & feelings are conveyed through what isn’t said.
