Some Like It Hot

The film is an outrageous, hilarious, and amazingly unpretentious trip through a funhouse of sexual identities. Some Like It Hot was released in 1959 but its effervescence and sparkle are timeless. I guarantee that it will make you laugh out loud.

WHAT. It’s iconic. It’s stunning. It’s riveting. It’s hysterical. It’s theatrical.

those who say that it is long and boring, they simply don’t understand the whole range of old films. It was funny, especially the final scene

Pleasantly surprised by how much I actually engaged with this one. Sometimes the ‘legacy’ status of a classic can ruin the experience for first time watchers, and while I’ve heard of Some Like It Hot countless times, I went in totally blind plot-wise, probably helping my experience.

The story is a lot of fun. As it unfolded, I worried it might feel dated with the ‘impersonation’ element, but it aged really well! It stays light, genuinely funny, and leans into the absurdity of the character’s situations. It looks stunning too, I was gobsmacked by the opening - how do car chases from the 50’s look better than a lot of the cheap slop we get today?

I’m also ashamed to say this was actually my first Marilyn Monroe film, so it felt like quite a big moment. She’s fantastic. Everything looks effortless to her, her appeal goes beyond her looks - it’s more how approachable and friendly she feels on screen. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were also great, clearly having fun with the dual roles.

Excited to watch more Billy Wilder films, this was a seriously fun watch.
