I had huge expectations for this, I thought it was going to be blockbuster of the year, I was hyped.

I think it fell short, I really wanted to like it but I couldn’t.

This is personal taste but when the different generations come during the song it just threw me off.
And I hate that it did because we had spent an hour and 20 minutes to actually get to the part where we knew it was about to go down, and then the music piece happened and it threw me off.

Micheal B. Jordan was awesome, and honestly, the whole cast was shining, but even with that, with characters dying off, I wasn’t feeling a thing, it was kind of emotionless, no real depth in the characters.

I also love blues, but it’s unnecessary to have a song play every 15 minutes, I know what they were trying to do, it didn’t really work in my opinion.

It’s shot beautifully, I mean 55mm is something else, very well made, production wise.

I think the story lacks a bit.

And for the grand battle, it just kinda came and went. Again, major characters dying off and couldn’t feel a thing.

Also in that last battle, extras popping in and out, you see them for the party scenes, then they all kinda disappear, and then they’re back to get killed off. I mean…

Finally, did I really need an end credit scene, idk, it did fill some questions I had but honestly, it could’ve been resolved during the actual scenes, instead of having a 7 minute post credit scene, it felt more like a chore than a treat to have that sprinkled in there.

Obviously this is my opinion, lmk if you liked it or not, if you did, please comment on why, I wanna see if I missed something, since it’s getting really good reviews.

Thank you for reading!

unpopular opinion but this movie has a happy ending.

smoke ended up w annie & their baby in heaven.

stack ended up w mary. he wanted to be w her but he was scared she would be killed due to being with him (bc of race). now they can live happily together w/o the fear of dying

Sinners is the most offensively shallow film of the decade. It’s hate porn and gospel drag (blaxploitation). Its violence is blind, fetishized, and creatively bankrupt, like some sort of sad Django fan-fiction. It makes a spectacle of soul instead exploring what it is. Just vile.

I debated rating so highly, but ultimately I feel it's well-deserved. I'll start with how seamlessly subjects are tackled, from faith, love, and sacrifice to colonialism, culture, and community, all without pulling the viewer out of the experience. It's easy to mess up, especially when you're juggling reality and fantasy, each with its own set of rules and allegories. The way Coogler cinematically captures the significance of music throughout time is pure magic, and utilising magicians like Göransson (my goat) is genius. Underrated comedy/writing, profound cinematography, exceptional casting/acting (Wunmi Mosaku), volatile/enchanting characters, enthralling designs…It may not be the year's best, but it's up there.

A masterclass of modern film as it is amazing to say the least in every single aspect a movie should be amazing in. One of if not the best films of the last 2 decades. Micheal B Jordan gives a hell of performance and the ending is the movie’s best part without a doubt. 9.7/10

9.8 - Not a whole lot to add about the way this is so masterfully put together on a second watch - but here’s a few things that have really stuck out.

(Minor Spoilers)

1. I’ve (re)learned so much in the last five days about early 1900s southern US History.

2. This movie is romantic as hell. Smoke following anything Annie says despite not buying into it. Stack doing what he could in both lives to protect Mary. Sammie naming his club Pearline’s after one night. Grace losing all sense of logic and control over the thought of losing her family.

3. The relationship between Smoke and Stack is maybe the most special - the way Smoke can’t roll his cigarette’s and shakes whenever not around his brother. The way Stack was the only one he couldn’t kill. The way they never had a single conversation without mentioning the other. The way they were openly vulnerable and loving towards each other and always made sure the other was being safe. And even 60 years later, his brother is the focus of what Stack about.

4. I know the twins present as the protagonists, but this is Sammie’s story - and the only theme that truly matters the entire way is freedom. It’s what the twins were pursuing. It’s what Sammie was pursuing.

1. Smoke makes the whole plea to not take credits cause it’s not real money and has no power and that’s not going to let them be free.
2. Annie says that the townspeople just need to be free in their juke for a night, to not think about the world they still live in, and just be in a place for them.
3. They encourage Sammie to taste real freedom by going to the other town run by “proper” black people.
4. Remmick’s true goal is Sammie because he can open up a way for Remmick to truly be free of this world and back to his own people.
5. Sammie’s dad says he will only be free if he commits to God and gives up music, but Sammie declines knowing he’s never felt freedom like he did the night before when he was playing.
6. Remmick offers freedom of pain (physical and emotional) and death by joining the vampires, but Annie says accepting death and meeting those waiting for them would free them more.
7. And I think it’s no accident that the whole town was mostly sharecroppers on Klan lands, showing even the freedom they had was an illusion, and turning to their own community was all they had.
I’m sure there’s even more that I can pick up on from more watches. But I had to compile these thoughts in one place. I love when a movie entertains as much as it teaches. This is a special one.

The only genuine complaints I’ve seen are uneven pacing (which I can understand), and lack of character development (which I only half understand, because I mostly disagree but also the whole thing happens in under 24 hours).

Here’s to hoping for at least one more watch in premium formats before it leaves theaters.

This was outstanding. I knew absolutely nothing about this film and was floored by everything that happened in this. Incredible performances. Master class of talent all around.

Took an hour to see a vampire in a vampire movie. They had a kid eat sum cooch before we saw a vampire

A movie so good I didn’t mind watching it in the second row of the theater

Everything about this movie felt very intentional and fine-tuned; I LOVED the soundtrack, it did a great job establishing the setting and that musical montage (while a little out of place) gave me chills.
As crazy as this may sound, I feel that they didn’t even really need the whole vampire plot, and they could’ve made a very similar period piece without it that would’ve been just as good. The vampires honestly confused me a little bit because it seems like they get a pretty sweet deal; You can live forever, fly, don’t really feel pain, hang out and have big dance circles with your buddies, and you just have to not be outside in daylight. By the end of the movie I was 100% team vampire.

music and vampires 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️. visuals and cinematography were incredible. that one past and future scene is officially one of my all time favorites. outfits were really lovely in this and as always, really appreciated the subtitle font. the music 🔛🔝 a bit overhyped imo tho 🤷🏻

I don't get the hype around this movie. I mean the acting is good and the cinematography too, but that's it. The plot is generic and drags on for a long time at the beginning. They should have focused on the horror from the beginning and not just at the end.

So bad. So surprisingly bad. How could it be up for best of the year?!?! Weird.

If my mate griff was a vampire I’d let him bite me x

Very good vampire film. Pacing was very good, you didn’t have to wait to long for the action to start. Loved how the camera panned out when they got let into the barn. Great cinematography.

Michael fends off BT's that are trying to hurt him, protect them Michael, you are the protector. Get them all, we can't have them roaming around.
