They never circled back to the whole bush shaving thing

Hard to rate, hard to review. I don't think I've ever seen a cult story like this before. Apart from the music, eeriness, and acting, all of which were done brilliantly with a wild amount of enigmatic tension, nothing stood out like the premise. It knows you're expecting the traditional 'escape' style narrative, so seeing certain things play out weirdly felt...weird. Most of the negative reviews seem to miss the sinister conversation 'Opus' calls for. The director wants us, like Ayo, to question what makes a cult. Who? Why? How? Whether it be moderate or extreme, cult behaviour has always been mainstream..."Teach them young and the world will be yours".

Terrible from start to finish. The film tried desperately to be something it's simply isn't, not even close.
And none of its elements helped make it even remotely decent. The story was so weak and hollow and pretty much lacked-

I really wanted to love Opus. The premise is brilliantly strange—a reclusive pop superstar using a comeback album as a front for a cult? That’s a killer hook. And honestly, Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich are great; they both turn in compelling performances that almost make it work.

But the movie is just a mess. It suffers from a serious identity crisis, veering wildly between horror and comedy without ever finding a groove. It makes for a frustrating watch because you can see the potential, but the script is all over the place and the supporting characters feel like one-dimensional caricatures. It’s a fascinating failure—great ideas, hollow execution. 5.6/10

this is a fascinating deep dive on modern cultures obsession with celebrity culture. it’s absolutely at worship status & everyone is more accessible than ever due to the internet! & honestly how are we not to expect those we worship to believe, at some level, that they’re a god?

First of all, Stan Twitter would tear this old sassy man and his music tf up.

Secondly, I love Ayo, she’s so pretty, and I like watching her act and run.

Third, EEEEEUUUUGHHHHWWWWWWWWW.

Very The Menu, just not as good. VERY Midsommar, just not as scary. Don’t hate it though!

This film was so creepy😱😱. And was much more elaborate than I first thought. I thought it was going to be a close midsummer (I still haven't watched that yet) but this film has great potential for sequel I think only because I feel like this story didn't have a clear end there is a lot more to explore with the plot and whatnot. The cinematography had a very nostalgic feel along with Ariel's clothing. It was tied very much to the eighties which links with the moretti and sort of foreshadows Ariel's position or role at the end of the film, which I am assuming is the new leader or trailblazer for the cult society she was stuck in.

3.6 - Holy disappointment.

I typically love this subgenre. Good people in shady situations figuring out the mystery and fighting their way out (or maybe not). Midsommar, The Menu, Get Out, even last year’s Blink Twice, & surely many others all do this general idea infinitely better.

It’s just flat. It’s an unimaginative, or maybe uninspired, derivative of the movies I listed above. Completely feeling like we’ve been there, done that.

There’s not enough bite, nuance, or depth to the commentary to make it a competent satire. It’s devoid of any campy elements or humor. And there’s nothing particularly scary or even tense enough to deserve a thriller or horror genre designation.

Ayo Edibiri & John Malkovich do enough based on sheer talent to carry this through. But they’re given so little to work with between a bland screenplay & middling direction, that I feel like I wasted my time - something I essentially *never* feel after watching a movie.

I hate putting this lower than some of the other movies I’ve seen (especially recently), but I weigh expectation & what a movie promises or strives to be so heavily & this misses all of its marks.

Go watch Mickey17 instead, moviegoers.

On a serious note the commentary would be better if this would be a tv show.the acting was good from the leads qnd not so much horror, it feels like many things at 1

Boring, predictable, and nothing new. My expectations of A24 films are low but this was better than the other bs they’ve been putting out. Beautiful picture as always to give credit where it’s due.

For me personally I loved the style, atmosphere (most of it) and eerie sense of it all (and I want my review to reflect that and only that (also I’m not a horror person))

John Malkovick is iconic

I really love Ayo, so I liked this more than I expected to! Kinda your typical cult movie that makes you feel weird and uncomfortable for majority of the movie. I was getting major Don’t Blink vibes at first. The ending really brought it all full circle and left you even more disturbed. Wasn’t as bad as some of these reviews made it out to be!

I did not like the singing, who gave that old man auto tune

Reminiscent of Midsommar. Malkovich’s prosody irritated me & his character was so ridiculous it took me out of it at times. Edebiri was the best part! Interesting message on cults, pulls inspiration from real world. Was constantly surprised, never knew what was coming next.

A great addition to films in this sub genre.

This film reminded me very much of Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Ari Aster’s Midsommar, & most recently Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice. The story wasn’t executed quite as well as those films but it was still a good story overall.

Great cast.

Sitting somewhere between Eddington and Midsommar, Opus makes John Malkovich into the Prince of his own little Project Mayhem. When has someone earned immortality? Can they achieve it anyway?
