This was quite the production! A good look at how people felt and went about things at the time. Some really nice scenes like the church and procession of boats.

The bait-and-switch death at the end was clearly written to shake viewers out of apathy and highlight the loss of innocence and noncombatant casualties in war, and cliche as it might be today, it was effective and caught me by surprise. The story was as heartwarming as it was heart wrenching, and the entire time I felt the weight on this one woman’s shoulders, unable to take part in the war effort in traditional ways but having it come to her doorstep over and over again nonetheless.

My Rating: 8/10

Nominated for 11 Oscar’s and won 6. One of the best war films made in my opinion, especially since it was right in the thick of it when it was released. Love Greer Garson.
