Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match
Rated: 6.6/10 ⭐️
I expected a fun, retro 80s action trip, but the choppy pacing and uneven tone left me feeling pretty underwhelmed.
What Worked:
Spaulding’s blocking and Studio IAM’s neon animation give the 1980s aesthetic a cool, nostalgic weight. Through my Faith Methodism lens, Johnny stepping out of his ego to help Ashrah reminds me we’re called to look past selfish ambitions to protect the vulnerable. The synth-heavy score and Gottfried’s hilarious final performance also give the comedic beats a super dynamic flow.
The Cuts:
The middle really dragged for me; the secret Hollywood cult mystery stalls the momentum. Keeping it spoiler-free, leaning hard into goofy 80s comedy makes the villain’s plan and the overarching stakes feel half-baked. Plus, the jarring tonal shift between bloody MK fatalities and lighthearted Christmas jokes makes the overall vibe feel pretty inconsistent as well.
Verdict:
A fun but uneven origin story. Okay if you love Johnny Cage and retro vibes, but skip if you need a tight narrative.
Line: “The Big Man wants to hire you.”

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match
Cage Match succeeds by being different. After grim, high-stakes entries, its confidence in character-driven storytelling feels refreshing. Johnny Cage shines as a protagonist, validating long-held fan beliefs.
