Molly's Game

Molly’s Game is one of those movies that feels like it’s running on pure intelligence, nerve, and caffeine. Aaron Sorkin’s writing is, unsurprisingly, razor-sharp and relentless and full of the kind of machine gun dialogue that could collapse in the wrong hands but instead becomes the movie’s pulse. This is a film that trusts words, loves words, and weaponizes them, and Jessica Chastain is more than capable of carrying every single one.

Chastain is phenomenal here. She plays Molly with exactly the right mix of polish, ambition, control, and quiet devastation, never letting her become just a “girlboss in trouble” cliché. She’s magnetic because she plays Molly as someone constantly building the illusion of total composure while everything underneath threatens to crack. It’s such a precise, layered performance, and she gives the film its backbone.

Idris Elba is also fantastic, bringing warmth, gravity, and just enough skepticism to ground the whole thing whenever it threatens to disappear into its own high speed self mythologizing. And then there’s Kevin Costner, who shows up and does what Kevin Costner does best: embody years of regret, authority, and complicated parental damage with barely a shift in tone.

What makes Molly’s Game especially impressive is that this was Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, and somehow it doesn’t feel like a first film. Yes, it’s wordy, aggressively, gloriously wordy, but the direction keeps pace with the script’s energy. The structure jumps through time, legal jeopardy, memory, performance, and self preservation, and Sorkin manages to keep it all propulsive instead of exhausting. He directs the film like someone who understands that speed is part of the seduction.

And beneath all the flashy money, celebrity poker mythology, and tailored coat power walking, there’s something more bruised and human. Molly’s Game isn’t just about high stakes cards; it’s about control, punishment, reputation, and the impossible cost of surviving in rooms built by powerful men who still expect you to know your place. One of the film’s best lines, “You’re about to see a whole new version of me”, feels like both a warning and a mission statement.

The real life trivia only makes it better. The film is based on Molly Bloom’s 2014 memoir, itself drawn from her actual experiences running exclusive high stakes poker games for celebrities, athletes, Wall Street titans, and eventually figures connected to the mob. Sorkin reportedly wrote the role with Jessica Chastain in mind, which makes perfect sense because the part feels tailored to exactly what she does so well: intelligence under pressure, elegance with an edge, and emotional restraint that still bleeds through.

Molly’s Game is slick, dense, beautifully acted, and almost obnoxiously well written in the most satisfying way. It’s a movie about power that understands performance is power, language is power, and keeping your dignity in a world determined to strip it from you might be the biggest gamble of all.

Molly's Game

awesome. yes, it's over-exaggerated with some real pretentious dialogues & massive daddy issues. but it keeps you hooked, not because of the characters but because of the story, cause damn i just wanted to know how the hell did we get here. also, lots of pretty fancy clothes ;)

Molly's Game

Even though it was a biography there were a few elements that made it appear meta. I.e. Talking about making a movie about her in a movie about her. It was quite enjoyable and I can say I learned a decent amount from this film. I wish it went a little deeper into how she settled.
