Genuinely what was this. The dialogue was repetitive and it made no sense. We just kept circling around to the same topics with no resolution. Every time I thought it was ending it would inch forward again. And making Pedro squat down like that and then ZOOMING OUT was a crime.

I hope people will look back at this movie after 5-10 years and consider it a classic. Such a beautiful story about love and dating and marriage. Dakota, Chris, and Pedro were all so charming. I could ramble on about the dialogue and scenes and how it all connects with their characters but I’ll skip all that and just say go watch this movie!

no yea like i understand but it felt like they had a strong idea on the movie but didn’t go any deeper and just started filming yk? and the main conflict with the her client wasn’t even fully fleshed out it almost felt just pushed aside. pedro wasn’t even hit for some reason

Quite cliche, predictable and lacks the feeling of actual chemistry. I think the side story involving Sophie was done well into highlighting the dangers of dating, but Dakota Johnson’s dialogue in moments with Chris Evans felt forced and, again, cliche towards the end. 6/10

In past lives Celine strong got the idea of long lost love right. In materials she fell flat. The first half was wonderful. Dakota was wonderful. But nothing/no one else really fit. There were many layers and some were good, but as a whole it just wasn’t there.

I expected more rom com vibes… it’s a weird mix. The pacing isn’t quite as slow as past lives, but I still found myself wanting it to get to the point. Oddly Pedro actually feels like poor casting… he’s wasted a bit on this script.

This starts the dialogue on something vital in our current dating culture in an earnest dialectical way without feeling dialectical. The earnestness feels really reflected in its cinematography. Dialogue strikes a good balance between being naturalistic and falling into whatever…

I'd call this more rom-con than rom-com. I'm actually surprised this is by the same Celine Song who did 'Past Lives,' but to put it briefly, the first 5 minutes had more potential than the actual 2-hour runtime. The acting is atrocious, as is the pretentious script, and the plot and characters made absolutely no sense as a film. Bringing in Pedro's character and then taking him out the next felt wasteful, and the whole commentary on SA left me confused about why it was even included. Not to say the film wasn't thought-provoking, but for what it's trying to do, it did nothing for me. Boring score, decent cinematography, zero rewatchability.

People who are hating on this movie just didn’t get it. Great movie and amazing cast. I loved the dialogues. I do think that there should’ve been more scenes with Dakota and Chris because I felt like there was more chemistry between Pedro and Dakota and not much with Chris.

very relevant themes and great emphasis on what we should really value in relationships.

first of all, this is not a rom-com, second of all, chris evan character it’s just flat and the movie try us believe that he grow but…no, & the last one, i couldn’t understand dakota character bc it’s so contradictory and change in the last min with no valid explanation at all. 4

It’s a cute little romcom. I thought the caveman scenes were out of place but cute. I would have picked Pedro Pascal but to each their own 🤷🏻♂️😂

just decent, albeit an upsettingly jarring follow-up to celine song’s recent masterpiece. i’m not a big fan of the cast, and dakota johnson needs to stop receiving roles as soon as possible. some strong shots and lines, but overall a bit stunted and lacking a lot of grace

While Materialists doesn't necessarily reinvent the rom-com, it certainly pays fresh dividends to the genre. This style of film is often written off reductively, and yet Song has created a truly modern love story.

this may not be the feel good rom com others wanted, but I reeeeally enjoyed myself! this is one of the few movies i have seen in a while that has stuck with me, and i still think about it from time to time. this will be a classic in a few years no doubt
