7.8 - One of 2024’s biggest marketing blunders?
Between the subject matter & stacked ensemble, this feels built to generate awards buzz. But from what I can tell, WB did nothing to market it before it received great opening weekend buzz. It’s incredibly derivative of “12 Angry Men”, almost entering “remake” territory, but the added moral twist is well executed. Nicholas Hoult actually holds his own as the lead, something I’ve not been sure he can handle well so far in his career. He plays a well layered balance between sympathetic & unlikable that matches his character’s moral dilemma well. J.K. Simmons, Toni Collette, & Chris Messina all delivered strong support performances as well. It doesn’t offer a clean & clear ending, & the resolution that many will probably assume may get very mixed reactions. But overall it’s well-shot, doesn’t waste much time at all, & offers strong tension through the moral ambiguity.
If I had seen a single trailer, heard a single mention of it, or had anyone recommend it to me in any way before its opening weekend, I’d say it’s a dark horse for some awards steals. Not my favorite of the year by any stretch, but my 90% full theater loved it from what I could tell.

On retrouve la patte un poil bourrine de Mr Eastwood mais la brochette d’acteurs et une jolie narration font que l’ensemble se tient plutôt bien

Cheesebo was right. Love how each of the flashbacks were different through testimonies b/c everyone’s memory is a little different. Great detail

Clint Eastwood still making movies at 94, you would only hope for the best, especially me. I was gutted his last movie (Cry Macho) did so poorly and I don't know if it's Clint's decisions or his teams but they're disappointing. Despite being a legend, his flaws prove he's still human. The ending, the plot holes, the lack of detail, the characters, and the dialogue feel dry and unprocessed. I see the motifs, most are explicit and predictable though. Started great...turned into '12 Angry Men'...then gradually flops. If you love courtroom drama, this is exactly that with a favourable cast, emotional score, and thought-provoking story. Not Eastwood's worst or best. All I want is for him to leave with an absolute bang, even if he doesn't need it.

I wish the ending was a little less ambiguous but it wasn’t bad, slow at some parts, and a little frustrating lol

6.5/10 — liked the concept of the movie and the cast but feel like it was slow. Also didn’t receive any satisfaction from the ending

Shame on WB for trying to sweep this film under the rug. One of the best movies of the year and Clint Eastwood’s best film in a while. A movie that should be an award contender.

j'ai globalement bien aimé. Un coté 12 angry men qu'on ne peut pas ignorer. Mais jai aussi trouve le perso principal un peu con, au bout d'un moment mon gars faut choisir ce que tu veux

A frustrating Courtroom Thriller that hinges on a case too weak to effectively portray the flaws in our biased criminal justice system.

It is a great idea executed in the lamest possible way. Feels like a cheap afternoon drama movie. Even JK Simmons left quickly🤣
Surprisingly, I recommend it. Give it a try and take it as an excersise: What could've been done better? What aspects are well made?

5.7 did not enjoy this movie at all!! Toni is such a good actress but this movie didn’t do her justice, why was she on her phone 2 times? The story itself is also really corny and the ending? It feels like the budget was really tight after hiring all those good actors😭

If I could put this between like and meh I would. The concept was really interesting but the ending felt super rushed to me. Especially after how slow the first decent bit of the movie was. I did enjoy it overall but I wouldn’t give it any awards.

Not sure if it was a remake of 12 angry men but felt like it, not nearly as good

Not super amazing but not the worst, either. Somehow the quality of it made it feel like a PBS movie?? Idk

The entire premise feels forced, despite the cast I really struggled to see over the lame dialogue and the absurdity of the situation. The only light at the end of the tunnel here is the allegory. Can someone check on Clint Eastwood?
