7.8 - One of 2024’s biggest marketing blunders?
Between the subject matter & stacked ensemble, this feels built to generate awards buzz. But from what I can tell, WB did nothing to market it before it received great opening weekend buzz. It’s incredibly derivative of “12 Angry Men”, almost entering “remake” territory, but the added moral twist is well executed. Nicholas Hoult actually holds his own as the lead, something I’ve not been sure he can handle well so far in his career. He plays a well layered balance between sympathetic & unlikable that matches his character’s moral dilemma well. J.K. Simmons, Toni Collette, & Chris Messina all delivered strong support performances as well. It doesn’t offer a clean & clear ending, & the resolution that many will probably assume may get very mixed reactions. But overall it’s well-shot, doesn’t waste much time at all, & offers strong tension through the moral ambiguity.
If I had seen a single trailer, heard a single mention of it, or had anyone recommend it to me in any way before its opening weekend, I’d say it’s a dark horse for some awards steals. Not my favorite of the year by any stretch, but my 90% full theater loved it from what I could tell.

On retrouve la patte un poil bourrine de Mr Eastwood mais la brochette d’acteurs et une jolie narration font que l’ensemble se tient plutôt bien

I don’t like open endings, so that’s why it’s only a thumbs up for me, but the movie was great overall.

agree with justin’s reasoning to stay silent, even though james didn’t kill her locking him up is the best thing for society because james is a criminal abuser. james in a cell makes sure he can never hurt anyone again, the chance of justin murdering someone is lower than james.

Interessanter Film, Handlung etwas konstruiert, regt jedoch zum Nachdenken an.
