Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 Reviews

So, assuming this is supposed to be the entry for Chapter 1, I’m going to say I liked it, but the final score is going to depend on where this goes and how it wraps up.

Several different story lines introduced, which I see people complaining about, but it didn’t bother me as I know this is just the introduction to the series, and I’m curious to see how it all ties together. That Horizon flyer was practically a character itself. Glad we got to see who Pickering was at the end, and I’m assuming based off the name Kittredge showing up in two different story lines that those characters are related?

Is anyone else having trouble identifying Chapter 1 vs 2? This entry has no chapter designation, but the one titled Chapter 1 actually has image for Chapter 2. That’s why I’m assuming this was intended to be Chapter 1. 🤷‍♂️

slightly disappointed. This felt like a roller coaster 🎢 with too many stories going on. I couldn't connect as a viewer the intension & emotions the actors were putting out because another set of actors would come along and add distraction. I recommend save $ watch at home.

A waste of 3 hours. The story constantly switches perspectives so you never care about anyone. The music and cinematography are great. The acting is very hit or miss because they talk so quietly. The ending is just 10 minutes of Chapter 2 clips, like huh? A bad western.

Well made but it’s like watching 4 movies in 1 and it doesn’t have an ending since Chapter 2 continued the story. If they ever release it.

I love westerns and throughly enjoyed this one. I can see why some didn't care for it due to it's length and lack of action but this is a drama with some decent action.

lost me a little

What at first seems like an epic western with amazing cinematography and landscape, quickly turns into a dragged plot. It has practically no narrative momentum, and I was confused most of the time. However I can see this movie working for some.

You have to understand this was made and intended to be a multi-film project not standalone. And it doesn’t serve as a standalone film either. I thought the cinematography was great, I mean just absolutely gorgeous. the film was very honest in just the brutality of the west amongst the land and just the people. Wrongly or Rightfully so. No surgarcoat. No making one group better than the other. Just showing how raw and ugly it was. Hate that it was almost shadow banned by Hollywood. Good on you Costner. Excited for the next.

Kinda average, I would have considered this ‘meh’ if it wasn’t for the cinematography and gripping action scenes.

Apart from that, it’s too ambitious, and would’ve probably be better as a series rather than a film. It’s like The Ballad of Buster Scruggs… unintentionally?

Mildly entertaining but lacking a plot or direction. Very frustrating film as darts around for thee hours

Pretty slow but I think once it gets paired with the rest of the movies of the series it’ll be better

Don’t watch American Primeval on Netflix before watching this if you want to enjoy it. AP is just so good that it kind of made this movie seem bland to me. It’s also way too long, which didn’t help with my boredom. They could’ve cut out A LOT. There’s also like 10 different storylines following different characters which can be great but I didn’t like how they did it here. Most of the characters are shallow and I didn’t find myself caring about any of them. Had some strange music & editing choices as well. Hoping for better from the next 2.

2.5/5. It’s not that it’s bad it’s just since it’s the first entry to the series it does a lot of world building which hurts the movie. Also it did not feel like a 3 hour movie because of how many things were going on. Could have been shorter tho
