Plot was definitely very interesting, I loved how every character got their happy ending. Tbh if all your friends wanted your girl and you were cheating on her then you must be the problem…

Grudges were definitely not held for as long as they should’ve been, and there was a lottt of plot holes that they were often skipping happily over, but otherwise this movie just felt really cozy and like a big familial hug. I loved the lake scene especially. 🐟 7.5/10

NGL it took me a minute to realize the MMC, her love interest, was Josh Duhamel! He was such a baby! They both were. Another good movie. They simply don’t do movies, romance the same anymore

When they go low…fuck their best friend 🙂.

I wish I could say “all jokes aside,” but honestly that’s kind of the movie. Going into Catch and Release, I spent the entire runtime wondering how they were possibly going to make a romance work between a grieving almost-widow and her late fiancé’s best friend. The solution? They basically made the fiancé a massive asshole so that rooting for his best friend feels completely justified 💀. It’s messy and questionable but it somehow works.

What surprised me most was how naturally the relationship between Gray and Fritz develops. The film takes its time building their friendship, letting them lean on each other through grief and all the complicated emotions that come with it. Because of that, when the romance finally happens, it never feels forced or like the movie is rushing to pair people up. The chemistry between Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant is fantastic, and every interaction feels genuine. Also their first kiss—I’m not even joking it might be one of the best kiss scenes I’ve ever seen 🫢. The buildup, the tension, the hesitation, and then the reluctance to pull away afterward…like this what the girls want to see 🥹.

Beyond the romance, I think the movie’s greatest strength is its characters. Every member of the friend group feels like a real person with their own personality, flaws, and unique way of coping with the loss of someone they loved. The grief feels messy and human rather than overly dramatic, which gives the film a level of realism that a lot of romantic dramas lack.

Gray, in particular, might be one of the most mature protagonists I’ve ever seen. She discovers that the man she loved—the man she’s actively mourning and trying to honor—had been cheating on her the entire time 🙂. Yet somehow she manages not to spend the entire movie tearing him apart. She even ends up helping the other woman and forming a friendship with her. It’s honestly unbelievable levels of emotional maturity. I aspire to be that good of a person because there is absolutely no way I’d be handling that situation with half as much grace.

I also have to give credit to the soundtrack and cinematography. Neither is flashy, but both perfectly match the film’s bittersweet tone, helping create an atmosphere that feels warm, intimate, and reflective.

Overall, I really enjoyed Catch and Release. It’s funny, heartfelt, surprisingly mature, and far more emotionally nuanced than I expected. Will I rewatch it? Probably not. This feels like one of those movies you watch once, carry with you for years, and randomly think about long after the credits roll.

A heartfelt, cozy, and surprisingly funny. Catch and Release handles grief and romance with a delicate, realistic touch. Backed by a great ensemble cast and a nostalgic soundtrack, it’s a beautiful feel-good movie about moving forward.
