christina ricci steals the movie. pretty cool indie film style if you can say. very unique use of editing and cinematography that just works. movie just has an aura around it that can be described as just “uncomfortable” because the protagonist isn’t very likeable, but it works.

Could not appreciate it even if it was funny sometime, mostly because the man is insufferable, that she's 17 in a minidress shivering in the cold and suffers from severe stockholm syndrome

I thought this movie had pretty funny scenes, but in reality it was a glorified stockholm syndrome relationship. Layla did not have much of a personality outside of loving Billy. Billy who did nothing but yell at her and rarely apologized. He was a bad person, and yes, this was obviously caused by his time in prison and his parents, but he took his anger and trauma out on everyone. Despite this, Layla loved him and I think it shows what an abuser wishes his partner was like. Loyal, beautiful and obedient. Someone who talks about him all day without defiance or reluctance. She doesn't need to be urged because she wants to. She wants her man despite all he is.
Christina Ricci is very beautiful in this movie but she was also 17 playing a 28 year old. Another thing I think adds to that type of man's 'perfect woman'.

Returned to this film after like 5 years and it’s still holds up really well, the cinematography was so carefully stylized, the ending is so good and the music complements the film’s bleak tone nicely. Still like this movie a lot.
