3/15/26: oh my god my favorite Oscar nomination. Yes it’s a lil historical fan fiction at moments, but it never smacks you over the head with a message of self importance!! Ethan Hawke literally becomes invisible and disappears in this character. Absolutely phenomenal. Hehehehe a fav of mine from the modern decade

8.6/10 Very fun movie set in one place. Ethan Hawke steals the show and makes the entire movie. He’s a big part of the rating. Really a great showing of how you can’t always see if something is a classic as easy as it may seem

a cozy and charismatic film that entirely surrounds one charming, queer artist and his complicated relationships from throughout his life. ethan hawke is tremendous, alongside a stellar script and strong direction. largely uneventful, but engaging and warm at all times

I really liked this film even though it’s primarily Hawke talking throughout most of it, which is pretty impressive. The camerawork is great but why make him pine for a woman when that never happened. It would’ve been more realistic if it was a man. That really annoyed me.

This movie felt like watching a book. Really really good.

Came for the Ethan Hawke Oscar nominated performance, stayed for the charismatic, yet harrowing dialogue on self-despair.

I’m usually pretty hit or miss with these monologue driven films, but the writing was just so damn good here. Many times I found myself chucking with certain lines that made a great impact. It’s very deep, methodical, but more often than not, incredibly funny.

Ethan Hawke really is fantastic here, he rarely isn’t in fairness. Although some height discrepancies distracted, his charm and charisma was palpable and left me seriously impressed with his work. I liked Bobby Cannavale a lot here too, he felt pretty front a centre here which was neat to see in a film which you wouldn’t typically match with him.

Not my favourite Linklater film of all time, but it’s a very solid time nonetheless. This does feel like more of a personal endeavour opposed to being an ultimate, relatable tale - and I honestly I respect it.

Is Ethan Hawke actually that short..

Absolutely brilliant!

I don’t know anything about Lorenz Hart’s personal life but Ethan Hawke was great as always and portrayed that unwanted loneliness that is stuffed down by drinking and telling his life stories. This felt like a theatre production in the way it is shot and paced along with the neat tricks to make Ethan Hawke shorter.

A stagey Drama for theater-lovers about an alcoholic motormouth who never shuts up or divulges his true feelings.
