my jaw dropped at the plot twist at the end. literally DROPPED. This movie is literally beautiful like the aesthetic and the chemistry is just like top tier. Never hated anyone more than that little girl played by Saoirse.

was not expecting that ending. what a beautiful full circle to the title. perfect wording. it’s a very sad story in it’s entirety, but a damn good film. makes u question ur feelings of characters.

the deviation from chronological order portraying how much briony wishes she could go back as well as different perspectives is breathtaking. the score with the typewriting ticks woven in throughout the movie 12/10. james mcavoy deserves all the accolades and keira knightley was born to play in period pieces.

I’m a sucker for a period piece romance movie. This was beautiful and harrowing. The directing was 10/10

The first 50 minutes were genuinely engaging and interesting, but after that it went downhill.

It felt like nothing was happening, I found myself just watching the progress bar going on and on closer to the end, wondering, is this how it's going to end? Spoiler alert: yes.

Thought this would be a romantic « Jane Austin » style film, it was not. It’s quite difficult to follow the story, and the middle is too long and unnecessary. However, the end was a definite plot twist and offered some explanation. Interesting, but not a hit.

“Reparation for a wrong”. WOW. Did not expect that…jaw dropped. But honestly one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Did have its slower moments but the ending made it all come together in the most beautifully tragic way. Ugh a love for certain

the ending is so tragic but it was a really well told story. i loved how the perspectives changed everything and briony as an unreliable narrator. super tragic but i think some of the best stories are.

Loved the acting. The movie is truly amazing. Following the attraction between the two characters who are tragically torn apart by jealousy and misunderstandings. The writing is brilliant and goes to show, even with a tragic ending, how the storylines intertwine perfectly. 💚🎬🍿

Had such a good cast and great acting- just the plot was not as exciting as I hoped it would be. Pretty predictable and I wasn't a fan of the ending.

8.8 - One of the most faithful adaptations I’ve ever seen.

I read (audio-book assisted) Atonement by Ian McEwan for the first time just a couple weeks ago & had to see this as soon as possible.

The book is heavy, yet gripping, & I think the care and detail to put this story to screen so faithfully was remarkable.

Saoirse Ronan absolutely deserved her Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for such a powerful performance at such a young age (though Briony is getting way too much hate in reviews; it’s just pure misunderstanding & love and concern for her sister & her cousin). The rest of this loaded cast performed well too. The costuming & sets were fantastically immersive, & the score is one of the best matched to its story’s emotional beats I’ve seen in a long time.

While this is far from a personal favorite I can’t deny it’s a masterfully made film in many ways.

“Briony when I catch you briony” fuck briony prob one of the worst characters imo props to ronan bc she made me hate her and I love ronan. Give me James mcavoy in a war piece 🙂‍↕️. The lighting, the beach scene, THAT DRESS💋💋 OMG! Overall I fuck with this movie very much 😁
