It was just so long and drawn out. Iโm sure for its time it was incredible but I almost fell asleep from all the silence

this movie is so far ahead of its time and really prophetic almost - the ending totally caught me off guard and seemed like super disconnected from the rest of the plot - visually one of the best movies iโve ever seen especially considering how old it is - goat sci-fi film

Got more questions during this movie than answers but the ambiguity is tight. End is off the rocker wild. W.

Pretentious filmbro movie about dudes floating in space. I guess if you like watching paint dry, this movie is for you.

Yes, it was ahead of its time by several decades, groundbreaking, and all of that stuff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it holds up today.
And before you say anything, yes I understood it.
Perfectly-directed slow burn with great philosophical themes. Not for me tho.

An absolut masterpiece. One of the most unique, stunningly captivating endings in film. The best, and most well used soundtrack and cues Iโve ever heard. A well put together piece of ART. The use of silence, and tension building is amazing. 10/10 top to bottom. 1000% recommend.

9.4 - My big movie goal for 2026 is to fill some of my major blindspots, & this seemed like as good a place as any.
I would say sci-fi is probably my favorite overarching genre - but I donโt know that I actually loved this, to be honest. But I recognize itโs absolutely a masterpiece & clearly one of the most seminal & influential sci-fi works of all time.
The realism & effects are mind-boggling when I remember this was made in 1968. Itโs not hard to see why Kubrick is credited with faking the moon landing!
The messaging is where I, & surely many others, am struggling the most. Is it optimistic & hopeful, showing us accessing a new evolution & elevated phase of existence for humanity? Or purely the opposite? Is our reliance on technology & our own pursuit of the next phase of existence going to ultimately lead to our doom? I know both interpretations are popular, but I canโt help but fall into the latter camp & find the general message both dark & pessimistic.
Iโll also admit, it was a little hard to get through at times. The long, drawn out, scenes of complete darkness; the extended scenes of slow movement & no sound but the heavy breathing of the astronauts & the constant white noise of the EVA air pumps; then ending with such an abstract & open-ended sequence; (among other parts) all made this more of a chore than I anticipated. And I canโt help but say I was the slightest bit disappointed at myself & how much I struggled & honestly how little I want to experience it again (at least until it gets an IMAX rerelease for its 60th anniversary in a couple years.) But maybe it will work out for me like The Shining has where Iโve grown to love it more with every watch.

I have no idea what I just watched. The visuals with the eerie music gave me chills. Lost on the plot and if you arenโt into movies with little dialogue, this might not be for you. That being said, i still loved the movie and definitely one of the most unique movies Iโve watched.

If you watch this with an open mind, it in theory is a really good movie. That being said, it was made in 1968 so it isnโt anything spectacular. It does take on some interesting themes with ai and space/time travel. Donโt need to watch it though.

Every scene feels super drawn out like theyโre trying to show off the practical effects which were impressive at the time but are dated now
