white people only like this movie because they feel personally responsible for slavery

this movie doesn’t shy away from depicting the horrific but yet realistic truth about slavery and afro-american history. our duty of never forgetting this past drives us to actively learn from this powerful movie. it is a must seen.

Just phenomenal acting all around. Every shot of this movie is intentional.
Yes movies like this are uncomfortable to watch, being confronted with history can be uncomfortable. But do yourself a favor and be uncomfortable for 2 hours of your life.

this is such an incredibly powerful film. i can’t help but draw comparisons to what ICE is doing to immigrants today in the united states and how decades from now our descendants will make film adaptations of the horror befalling people of color right now in our country and people will watch it and wonder how the hell we allowed it to happen 💔

All slave movies are white supremacy propaganda. Fuck Slave movies. Fuck racism.

Boring... Yes, the actors... and the shots... and blah, blah, blah... But do we need this movie to realize that slavery is bad? I mean, you could just write “Slavery is bad” on the screen and watch it for two hours. Everyone knows this, but no one wants to say anything against this picture and its artistic value. I don't recommend watching it unless you are a sophisticated gourmet of selected boring films or a descendant of slave planters.

A searing and thought-provoking portrait of pre-Civil War American slavery... 12 Years a Slave is an absorbing and divinely crafted film, even if it is a brutal watch.

a very devastating film to watch but an important one. the performances by Chiwetel Ejofor and Lupita Nyong’o were brilliant and heartbreaking at the same time. the soap bar scene has been burned into my brain ever since i first watched this over a decade ago

Not my first watch but the first in a long time. Didn’t remember much. Such a beautiful, tragic, and infuriating film. Last 10 minutes brought me to tears. Beyond me how Chiwetel Ejiofor didn’t win best actor.

Decir que ame esta película se siente raro. Aunque estaba muy buena la peli, lloré un montón y me sentía muy incómoda porque esto no es ficción sino lo que pasaba por muchos años.

A tight, heavy, and deeply affecting masterpiece that doesn't pull any punches. It perfectly balances a horrific depiction of cruelty with a poignant testament to the human spirit's endurance. It’s Unforgettable.
