This is such a great idea for a show, and season 2 improved on the first season in just about every way. And, honestly, it makes me question whether this NBA season was scripted!! Like, what are the odds that they decide to get both Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tyrese Haliburton, and that Hali has the most odds-defying, entertaining, and devasting postseason run in NBA history? The fact that we got to see the behind-the-scenes on every part of that postseason run is so awesome and so heartbreaking. Like, being in the room with him as he is facing the immediate aftermath of that Achilles tear genuinely feels like it’s pushing a boundary, but it’s such fascinating footage. I’m so, so glad they decided to focus on Haliburton.
And, listen — I hate the Thunder and their brand of basketball. I’m not particularly excited about SGA (though he’s definitely not the “free-throw merchant” everyone makes him out to be — the fact that the Thunder hardly get called at all on the other end is what bothers me 😤), and seeing the inevitable take place in slow-motion was kind of brutal, since I did NOT want the Thunder to win. But he comes across in this as such a nice, respectable dude who loves his teammates and his family, and it’s hard not to be happy for him.
Everyone else was fun too! It’s cool to see the perspectives of players like Kevin Durant and James Harden, even if they didn’t really make any splashes. The only one I wasn’t a huge fan of was Jaylen Brown — he’s just such a fake intellectual, and it’s kind of irritating hearing him say the dumbest, most meaningless sentences and acting like it’s some deep insight. Makes sense they wanted someone on the Celtics, though.
Overall, I just think the selection of players was so fun and led to some incredibly good storylines. It’s a shame that it doesn’t seem like this show will be picked up for a third season, but it makes sense. It seems like it would be an INCREDIBLY invasive process, and I definitely wouldn’t want to be the subject of one of these shows. NBA stars have sensationalized enough lives — surely not many of them want to star in their own reality shows as well. Great season, though!
