Spinning Out
The plot was amazing, the characters were amazing, and the issues addressed were amazing. Though I’m genuinely sad this show wasn’t renewed and won’t have a second season, I’m glad that everything ended on a happy note (for the most part).

Spinning Out
Raw, honest, and deeply underrated!
Spinning Out is one of those rare series that goes far beyond its surface premise. What looks like a show about figure skating quickly becomes a powerful exploration of mental illness, family pressure, identity, and the invisible battles people fight behind closed doors. I personally think it deserved far more attention than it received.
What stood out most to me was the raw, unfiltered portrayal of bipolar disorder. The series doesn’t glamorize it or reduce it to dramatic outbursts. Instead, it shows the daily reality—the fear of spiraling, the hope of stability, the moments of brilliance, and the weight of shame that society unfairly attaches to mental health struggles. Kat’s journey feels personal, painful, and true. The writers clearly wanted viewers to understand what it’s like to live with bipolar disorder, not just observe it.
The show also highlights experiences that aren’t talked about enough. Through Justin and his father, we see how Black families in America face unique pressures and stigmas, especially around masculinity, athletic success, and emotional expression. The expectations placed on them are heavy, generational, and often unspoken. Spinning Out doesn’t treat this as a side plot—it weaves it into the emotional backbone of the show, showing how these pressures shape relationships, identity, and self-worth.
What makes the series so strong is that none of these issues feel forced. They’re presented the way they happen in real life—quietly, gradually, and sometimes explosively. The acting is grounded, the relationships feel lived-in, and the show dares to look closely at topics most media only brushes over.
It’s disappointing that the series was cancelled, because there was clearly so much more to explore. But even with one season, Spinning Out remains a bold, beautifully acted, and emotionally truthful show that more people should see. It’s not just about skating—it’s about survival, vulnerability, and the courage to keep going even when your mind becomes the hardest place to live.
