New Girl
Bye-bye to my latest binge-watched sitcom 🥲
Seven seasons later, I definitely have thoughts.
To start with the negatives: the quality of the writing noticeably declines as the show goes on. As the seasons progress, some characters become more one-dimensional, while certain storylines are either forgotten or completely ignored. By the final stretch, major plot points feel rushed—Nick and Reagan’s relationship, Winston and Aly, and even Jess’s career arc all feel like they were wrapped up quickly just to reach the finish line. It often feels like the writers knew the end was coming and threw things together rather than letting arcs develop naturally.
That being said, I still loved this show. Despite its flaws, New Girl is one of the most heartwarming sitcoms I’ve watched. What truly makes it special is the relationships between the characters. Their love for one another is genuine, open, and never played for irony. They deeply care about each other, and the show never tries to hide or downplay that—if anything, it embraces it. That emotional core is what keeps the series so lovable, even when the writing stumbles.
Jess is the clearest example of this.
I really loved Jess. I know that some people find her annoying, but while her personality is definitely over-the-top and silly, she’s also incredibly kind and sincere. It’s honestly hard for me to dislike someone who leads with so much empathy 🥹. One of my favorite things about her is how she treats other women—especially her romantic “rivals.” She never belittles them or tries to elevate herself by tearing someone else down. That kind of kindness is rare in sitcoms, and it made her stand out to me. That’s my Jess 🥹.
Cece was another standout. I loved watching her guard slowly come down over the seasons, and how she became sillier and more comfortable being herself. Her friendship with Jess is one of the strongest parts of the show. That said, toward the end she definitely fell victim to flanderization 🤧, where her personality became a bit exaggerated and flattened. Still, her growth overall was really enjoyable to watch.
The Schmidt cheating arc was surprising and honestly disappointing. While I wouldn’t say it was completely out of character, it felt unnecessary. The way it unfolded—with Elizabeth being someone who had loved him for so long—made sense , but the storyline mainly served to inject angst into Cece and Schmidt’s relationship rather than add meaningful development. I actually wish we’d seen more of Schmidt and Elizabeth together, because their dynamic was genuinely interesting and revealed a lot about who Schmidt used to be.
As a character, I liked Schmidt. He was consistently funny, and his development throughout the series—especially in terms of maturity and vulnerability—was solid. He’s not my favorite, but he definitely earns his place in the loft.
Winston, aka Winnie the Bish 👻, had one of the best evolutions on the show. His character took time to find its footing, but once it did, it felt incredibly natural. Yes, he becomes wildly goofy by the later seasons, but it never felt forced to me—it felt like Winston fully embracing who he is 🥹.
And finally, Nick Miller.
I completely understand why everyone is obsessed with him—he truly is the best character. His development is the most realistic and emotionally grounded out of the entire cast. Watching him slowly grow, mess up, try again, and still remain unapologetically himself made him impossible not to root for. He feels real in a way that sitcom characters rarely do. I saw a lot of myself in him, which probably explains why he resonated with me so deeply 🥹.
Overall, New Girl isn’t perfect—but it doesn’t need to be. Its heart, characters, and relationships more than make up for its flaws. I really enjoyed the experience, and I’d absolutely check out any future series or spin-offs connected to this world.
Goodbye, loft 🥲🤍
