Mr. Robot

This show deserves even more recognition than it already gets, I think it stands among the greatest shows of all time such as Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. Not only is it such a well put together story, but the characters are some of the best I’ve ever seen put to film. Top Tier

There are times when you watch a show and, the entire time you’re watching, you know it’s absolute peak. Mr. Robot is one of those shows. Literally every aspect of this show is PERFECTION.

I feel like you can’t say much about this show without first discussing Rami Malek’s unbelievable performance. His portrayal of Elliot has instantly become one of my favorite performances ever — right up there with Bryan Cranston as Walter White and Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman. Rami’s ability to act with all sorts of little microexpressions is fucking incredible. He’s able to do so much more with his face than pretty much any other actor I have ever seen. Elliot goes on a fucking JOURNEY in this show, and it is all grounded in Rami’s amazing performance.

However, he is not the only one engaging in an absolute acting masterclass. Portia Doubleday, for example, portrays my favorite character in this whole show — Angela Moss. She performs every step of Angela’s story to perfection, and stole every scene she was in. BD Wong portrays one of the best TV villains ever in Whiterose. Christian Slater’s portrayal of Mr. Robot is amazing too. Carly Chaikin is already amazing, but has a scene near the end that might be one of the most effective and impressive bits of acting I have ever seen. Michael Cristofer sells you one of the most emotionally resonant evil tech CEOs you will ever see. And this isn’t to mention Martin Wallström, Bobby Cannavale, Grace Gummer, or Elliot Villar. Everyone is CONSTANTLY out-acting each other. I don’t know how they did it.

I’m also just shocked Sam Esmail was able to combine such distinct things into such a solid interweaving project. On one hand, you have the incredible tech hacker thriller (that is WAY more accurate than anything else in Hollywood) that’s on some serious James Bond shit. But, on the other hand, you have a deeply personal and touching mental health story of a lonely man suffering from DID. Not only do these two aspects of the show work so well alongside each other, but they are STRENGTHENED by one another. It’s a sign of really, really impressive writing and direction. Sam Esmail is a visionary.

I love depressing stuff. There’s something about media that can tell such difficult, dark stories that I really enjoy. I love being challenged by stories like that, as I am able to separate myself enough from them while still being able to feel them. And, I’m glad depressing stuff doesn’t bother me, because this show IS THAT. This is easily the darkest TV show I have ever seen, and it never really lets up. I am already an emotional person and cry when I watch stuff all the time, but there were a couple of episodes, especially near the end, that absolutely broke me. One in particular. And, again — that can only really be done because of how fucking good these performances are.

Is the show perfect? Honestly, I would say almost. However, there are a couple of things that did bother me slightly. The first is the way that they handle certain characters and their story arcs. I won’t say literally anything more on that so as to prevent spoilers, but you know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen the show. And, I do think season 2 was a little slow. I actually got swept up with real life for a few months right in the middle of season 2, and came back to it being SUPER confused, so that very likely made my experience different from other people. However, I have seen that being a common consensus among the community. But, honestly? That’s really it.

This show is so fucking incredible. The twists and turns of Elliot’s story were so much fun to experience, and I think it’s only a matter of time before I watch it again. And I have a strong feeling it’ll be even better on a rewatch.

Mr. Robot

Amazing show, the writing in this show is some of the best you’ll ever see in any show, 100%. Elliot is one of the best protagonists in show history as well, so much goes into his character. The last season was impeccable and the ending was extremely well written and poetic.
